Are you sure we wouldn't lose more potential recruits than we would gain under a policy change?

Yes, because one must bear in mind that the men and women serving in the military all ready know homosexuals serve among them. Only the most irrational among them would be fine knowingly serving with homosexuals, but then take issue with their ability to simply be honest about their homosexuality. Said individuals probably aren't exactly brimming with viable alternative employment opportunities.

The fact is that we've lost over 10,000 viable soldiers due to this policy, some of whom were exceptionally valuable (common example: fluent Arabic translators). Further, we've lost an indeterimate number of individuals who might be willing to serve in the military if only they could serve without hiding their sexuality. That's a lot of soldiers that would have to quit over homosexuals simply being allowed to be honest before you'd even start to get into negative numbers.

I want to go on record, however, as saying that even if it were the case that the net shift in soldier population were to be detrimental, I still wouldn't support institutionalized discrimination. I just also happen to strongly suspect the net change wouldn't be detrimental, and I think Admiral Mullen feels the same way.

We see the same pattern with civil rights.

Are you just referring to homosexuals here? Because many Democrats are also giving a poor showing in this regard.

I'm not just referring to homosexuals, but I do agree that many Democrats are also blameworthy on this topic.
