beckert10,
First of all, basic research can provide you with numerosu examples of what other people have done in the field of cultural-travelogue observation.
Secondly, you ASKED for comments and now are bitter when you do not agree with whats posted. |
But...But...We're all sui generis snowflakes! |

| Patrick, I can respect you and your response because it is thoughtful and does not attack me personally. This goes for anyone else who provides a well thought-out assessment. I guess I did come off as a little bitter because I feel like some people were more or less saying "it sucks" or worse "you suck" without bothering to frame their argument in any sort of context. I can take criticism, and I hope that it will be constructive instead of reducing my writing, and me, to nothing more than a racist's knee jerk reactions. I will stay mute from now on. I did want feedback, and I suppose, for better or worse, I am getting it. So, thanks to everyone. |

^ No one said that. But it is nice and succinct. Context? Like this?:
You: "here, this is my stuff. Please read it and tell me what you think."
People: "Comments directed at your blog citing stuff they didn't like." |

I don't know why everybody's getting all worked up. I got a good laugh out of the blog and I think that there are things in there that everybody can relate to. He captured the feeling of first coming to Korea pretty well too. Also, the way Jean speaks- priceless! Just like the manager at my old hagwon. The speeches and journals should ring a bell with anyone who's ever taught at a hagwon as well.
Come on, we all make snap judgements and have first impressions about people, he's just articulating those thoughts.
I think that it was a good job, it's not PC and it's not a sociology journal, it's a humorous look at things that everybody goes through when they get to Korea. It was an entertaining read and I read all 3 sections. Bad title, though. |

| I can't believe anyone on these boards, except maybe an absolute newbie who has just stumbled onto this site, would bother to read a Korea travelogue. This is the kind of thing that would be interesting to your friends/family back home, not people who have spent a year or more in the place. And yeah, a new one gets posted every month. |

| Why is it people say 'so it's not politically correct' like that's a defense of some sort. It's racist. Racism certainly used to be un-politically correct, but that seems to be going by the wayside. It's inappropriate, demeaning to certain marginal groups, and hurtful. |

Why do people have to reference kimchi whenever they talk about Korea? |
I guess there's a lot of it around. Also, it's one of the things that's uniquely Korean. Most other stuff people talk/complain/rave about can be found in other places, but not kimchi.

You are joking, surely. My store up the road sells pounds of it.
China.
Yeah, I guess you were joking. Sorry if I jumped the gun there. |

There's a lot of talk about cheap, inferior-grade kimchi being imported from China. Everyone knows, though, the best kimchi is always made by someone's mom. |

| It made me laugh. It isn't PC but it's his thoughts at the time, maybe exaggerated a little for comedy value. |
