So, I'm about to leave on a trip to Thailand, and plan to take my iphone with me. I thought I should get it insured, as if I lose it or it gets stolen, I"m still on the hook for the remainder of payments on my contract. When calling the iphone people today, I was informed that I had to buy insurance within 30 days of purchase, and could no longer buy it, which I don't remember being told, and makes no sense to me.

Anyway, would traveller's insurance bought at the airport cover loss of possessions? Any experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

Travel insurance usually won't cover lost or stolen electronics. Travel insurance is usually used to cover unexpected medical emergencies that may arise when traveling. To cover your electronic items, you would usually have to purchase additional coverage, a rider, but even then they almost always come with a per item limit which might not cover the costs to replace the Iphone. You might get enough to cover the remainder of the contract, depending on your monthly plan and how many months are left. Just read the fine print of the policy to check before you purchase a policy.

Last time, I purchased travel insurance from world nomad, they offered premium coverage to cover baggage and electronic items. I believe the policy limit for baggage was $2,000 US and the per limit item was $1,000.

Yes, the Iphone insurance has to be bought within 30 days. Whichever show store you bought your phone from should have told you that. The 30 day policy is to protect KT from people taking advantage of the insurance.

For example, 1 year into the contract I drop my phone in the pool. I sign up for the insurance. wait 2 days and then get my replacement phone. Then 1 week later I cancel the insurance so I don't have to pay monthly.

The 30 day policy is instituted to prevent those happenings, AND to get you to pay as many insurance payments each month as they can.

Also, the insurance doesn't cover the full price of the phone. It covers the phone up to like 600-700,00 won. So, if your Iphone is a 3G, 16GB 3GS then maybe that covers all of it. If you have a 32gb 3GS, then you gotta pay the difference if you want a replacement phone.

I just so happened to decide to go for the insurance today. So I had my co- call (since it's in her name) and they said it had to be done within 30 days. I purchased my iPhone the first day it came out so I was way over the limit. My co- said they didn't tell us that at the store so the agent decided to go ahead and register it to me anyway.

Pricing:
2,000 won per month: covers 400,000
2,500 won per month: covers 550,000 (if I recall correctly)
3,000 won per month: covers 700,000

I went for the 3,000 won option. I guess I got lucky with the agent. I'd try again if I were you.
