So it's my last month here in ROK.
and my boss is saying the 50,000 won that was taken from my paycheck automatically everymonth listed as "phone deposit" ( I dont have a phone, and I don't have internet either) will not be returned to me ... because it was used to pay the monthly maintenance.
Now here's the thing, the guy I replaced when I came here also paid this "phone deposit" and he got it back. He's still in korea and he's saying that he got the money back (with a small bit of arguing) and that the rent and maintenance are provided for by the school.
Now he was also here when the first (of three directors since ive been here) was running the school.
any legal advice? am i entitled to the money? i mean by law doesn't korea require they take care of rent, what about maintenance? |

| I assume this refers to the Ajummas that clean the stairs once a month...but Im still just wondering if my school is legally obligated to cover this cost since it falls in the same ballpark as rent.. I mean i pay my utilities obviously |

Get a Korean to check your bills, the Ajjuma cleaners comes off of YOUR maintenence bills. As long as you have been paying monthly bills for water and stuff your boss has no right to take this from you
a PHONE deposit is for a phone, you don't have one
the previous teacher got the deposit back, so should you what with the ansence of a phone.
Where in your contract does it say your boss is entitld to keep this money at a whim, where in the contract does it state that you should be deducted this money. If the answer to these last two questions is NO WHERE then the boss has no right whatsoever to your cash.
YOu do what you want, but I'd be playing hard ball and say that this will not fly. He has no right to take your money and if this maintenence was going to come out of your pay then he needs to word this in the contract and say that this is a non refundable 50 000 a month that will be going to maintenence. |

Everyone pays the maintenance fee. 50,000 sounds normal, a lot cheaper than my officetel. He COULD be lying and it could be less, but probably not.
I wouldn't listen to the chest puffers. I don't know of anyone who doesn't pay their maintenance fee. It sucks and it should be considered rent, but that's how it is. It's considered a utility fee, like garbage/sewer back home.
"Phone deposit" just sounds like some dumb English phrase he got off the internet or something. I mean, why wouldn't you have called him out on this before? 50,000 won a month for a phone deposit? I would've called BS on that my first month. |

For the love of GOD, maintenance on WHAT??? Your apartment? If so, that's a pretty good deal. It really depends on what this maintenance fee is for. Nobody here has any real idea what you're talking about unless you're specific! I say again, Maintenance on WHAT? |

Maintence Fee = 관리비
Very common thing in Korea. It covers the ajumma sweeping the stairs, the eleectricty and replacement of hallway lights, and its also another way for the building owners to make a little extra money for Soju and meat. |

Hence my comment that he get his bills checked out.
He may already be paying those ajjumas through his regular apartment bills, and thus his boss is robbing him. There are some people like him who address both sets of circumstances in our responses. |

Where I live, my friends and I handle our own maintenance fees. The boss pays rent only

That's exactly why I would listen to the chest puffers and demand the money back- Phone deposit does not mean Maintenance. |
