I'll be visiting home soon and need to bring back some gifts. I'm thinking about bringing back a few bottles of soju (perhaps some little bottles and some juice boxes of it, too). I know there's a 1 liter limit, but I've also heard that the officials generally ignore this as long as it's not a ridiculous amount. I'd also like to bring a few cans of Cass for some friends to taste.

Has anyone had experience with bringing more than the limit? What happened? Any idea what the taxes are like if they call me out on it?

Thanks

when i went home last year i took a two liter bottle of soju. i got taken to secondary, but for some reason i always get taken to secondary at US customs. customs went through all my bags, item by item. they asked what was in the bottle, i told them soju, they were fine with it despite the fact that it was obviously over 1 liter. i presume you'll be fine, probably the worst case scenario is having to pay duty.

I've made many international trips through customs and never declare anything. I've never been hassled. Once an agent asked me why I didn't have souvenirs. I told him because I was living in England and moving back (which was true) and he was fine with that. Pretty much every time I brought back many gifts including many bottles of alcoholic beverages. I don't think it's a big deal.

I shoved two bottles of absinthe in my main luggage bag last year and walked right through customs.

It's such not a big deal at all. I've taken absinthe and other non-legal liquors (though absinthe isn't so illegal in the US anymore) through customs many times while my custom form has a big 0 on it. But if you really don't have the balls for it, just claim everything and pay any custom taxes that apply on what you're bringing.

Have no idea about the US but don't try it with NZ, you will be caught and you will be fined
