When I was teaching in Korea, I found that amongst the typical male, drunk, non pro teacher, degree qualified, "why am i really here", might as well just have fun, english teacher - all had one thing in common most of the time.....if/ when i actually/ eventually go home, my life would most likely be no more sorted then the day i left to korea. i think that is mostly true, unless you are one of those dudes who saves all his cash, or enough of it.

a quick post to say, i had a ball in korea, as in not sure why i am here but might as well enjoy it much as possible. Never saved much/ actually anything.

and when i left, it was basically by force and had no idea what i would do back home (3 years ago now).

and you know what, worked out bloody well. my own biz, around 120,000 per annum in a beautiful city with a flexible schedule.

for all those paranoid, non teacher males in korea feeling the same way- yes, its hard to leave, yes it is easy there, yes it may be hard coming home. more messed up than when you left (thats why you left right?)

well let me just say, unless you are naturally gifted or just plain bloody smart, it will probably suck. and you should seriously stay and marry that slightly weird korean girl you are dating and worry about the consequences later. or stay single and just try and manage your exploding drinking problem, but at least keep those well paying, low tax jobs without the car insurance and payments and rent .

or try and become a foreign DJ and party while making extra cash (those guys were always my idols....they really have it together)

if you were born lucky though, and you back your ability to adjust and even excel in brand new and different/ changing environments , the biggest skill that leaving to teach in korea can actually teach you, then don't fear leaving and returning home to 'start over'.

it often turns out as the next best thing you did. good money, in your home country, where you actually have rights as a citizen, employment contracts that are backed up, or the right to do business, cleaner air, nicer apartments, and all the korean girls you want still (not that you would bother anymore).

heads up.

can't wait to see who hates this post (those who it upsets it applies to, except for the going home/ success bit) ...in 6 months when i can bothered logging back in and checking it.

You're actually going to make a 25 line post and then end it with "...in 6 months when i can bothered logging back in and checking it"?

That was one of the most forced, affected attempts at early 90's ennui slacker superiority I've seen, to say nothing of the fact that its about 2 decades past its prime.

You need to work on transitions. Otherwise, decent.

That's a very impressive net only three years after starting your own business. It's well worth bragging.

I had my own business for a decade and never came close to that!
And I had several employees and we worked very well, and very hard.

What field are you in?
What expertise do you have?
Was your success based on your own efforts alone or did you have a leg up?
*You stated that you had no money when you returned from Korea, how did you get started?
What country are you in?
Was there some crazy good fortune involved in your rapid success?

Please share a little more of your personal success story.
I think it is a great source of inspiration for anyone to hear how someone can
master these difficult economic times.
