I'm thinking of getting an iphone, but I'm in Korea 100% only for another 6 months. After that I could be staying or going. I figure I can't buy one in the store here because they seem to only sell them if you get a 2 year plan. I was thinking of getting one online. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows anything about pay as you go in Korea on the iphone, and if I get an iphone online, will I be able to use it in Korea, and then be able to use it back in Canada when I go home?

They won't sell you a phone online. You'd have to buy it from another country, unlocked, and get it certified to work here. (About 360,000 won).

Alternatively, sign a contract under a Korean's name and just break contract when you leave. You'd be charged a few hundred thousand won.

well i hope all of you took my advice about saving your shsh files if you wanted to make sure your phone would be jailbreakable. Apple released a minor firmware update and will no longer sign the older firmware (but if you did save your shsh files you can still trick itunes into signing the 3.1.2 firmware).

I mainly did it to ensure that my phone would be unlockable if i ever left korea.

Also, even if you do have the shsh file, i would recommend not upgrading to 3.1.3 for now, because it come with a new baseband, which at this point in time cannot be unlocked (and cannot be downgraded even if you go back to 3.1.2)

You can get a W214,000 discount if you have more than 18 months before the visa expires and take up a 24-moth contract. Oddly enough, you won't be able to get on an i- plan unless you have an F visa.

At least that is what they say on the KT customer support site. (The subsidy for a 12-month contract is substantially smaller.)

1) I've heard that people who brought over their foreign iPhone trying to use it on KTF's network may got bad reception. That was before the iPhone was released here officially though. Can anyone confirm this now?

2) I read a post from one person here who said they took their Korean SHOW iPhone back to Canada and had some small 3G issues as well as delayed or missing SMS.

I'm actually going back to the US in Spring (through the Summer) and was thinking about picking up an iPhone (possibly the 4G) and seeing if I could use it here. What do you guys think is a better option?

Well in regards to question 1: I believe that you have to have a foreign iphone approved, which carries a hefty fee, and it has to be a phone that is already unlocked to use with other networks.

and in regards to #2, I suspect that the issues that the canadian was experiencing was actually caused by using the blacksn0w unlock. There have been reports that after using blacksn0w, that iphones would drop calls or have non-working wifi, which could be resolved with a network reset on the phone.

And picking up an iphone in the US and bringing it here would not be such a great idea, because it would need to be an unlocked phone, and theres no guarentee that iphones with the latest (or newer) firmware can be unlocked.

If you want a truly international iPhone i would recommend buying a factory unlocked one from a country such as hong kong, or various EU countries.

Can anyone provide a definitive answer to the question:
Can E-2 visa holders get an iPhone?

Don't know if this will help but I got an iphone, 12 months installment on an E-7 visa (valid more than a year).
Paying about 61000 for the phone plus my old cellphone plan.

Yes, but...

I went to the trouble of getting my visa renewed early so that I had 12 months+ on my ARC. I was given the option of buying the phone in my name but it wouldve cost me about 750,000 (32 gb model) because I had to buy it outright. I might have actually done this just to keep a phone in my name and not a Korean friend's, however I wouldn't be able to keep my old phone number (since it was an older 016 number). The guy at the shop actually encouraged me to put it in a friend's name. I did, and saved myself about 400,000 won.

In short, yes, but only if you have 12 months+ on your visa. And, it'll cost you.

I just realized something. Has anyone actually ever seen someone out in the open using a sausage stylus? How many photos actually exist other than the two on the article? Has this idea been done anywhere else in the world other than South Korea?

Perhaps they were set up by LG or Samsung in an effort to make the iPhone look bad. It does look a bit silly and a lot of Koreans (well, a lot of any culture) might feel self-conscious about it. They've been suspected to release those rumours about the iPhone 4G (removable battery, LOL). Perhaps this is a stunt like that...

There is no reason to use a stylus. Humans have things called fingers. Just put a screen protector on the phone.

I believe the claim was that, as it was winter, people's fingers were too cold and they wanted to keep them in gloves or mittens.. so they used those sausages instead.
