...just shopping at the bookstores here in Korea?

So does anyone have a Kindle or Nook ebook reader? Or even one of the Korean e-book readers? I'm wondering what's better in the long run since I'll be in Korea for another 1.5 years at least, a Kindle or Nook. They're like $250-300, but the content you can access is much cheaper than what we can buy in Korea and available on demand.

That said, I don't even think I *buy* $250 worth of books a year...or maybe I do and don't even realize it because What the Book, Bandi & Luni's, etc, are so expensive.

I got the local version, the Iriver Story, off gmarket for 330,000W a couple of months back. Acquiring books is very easy if you know where to look. I feel kind of bad about taking that approach, but if I was at home I'd just be getting them out of the library so well...shrug.
It has a good quality MP3 player built into it too and 2 gigs internal plus and SD Media slot that can handle 32 gig cards and below. I've stopped taking any other device with me when I head out.
I definitely don't spend that much on books in a year though. Hopefully it's gonna hang in there for a few years but who knows. And with the nomadic life style that ESL often involves it's nice to think I won't have to worry about finding some to do with 10 kgs off books next time I relocate.

Also, there's a Kindle going cheap in B/S/T right now.

I really wanted to get the Nook before I left the states late last year. But BN sold out and is just now starting to get stock again. Anyway, you can't use the online store or any online features that make it cool outside of the US. To buy books you'd have to do on a computer with a US proxy or have someone at home do it, and funnel it through that way. So it really defeated the point for me. Cool piece of kit, though.

I have a Sony pocket reader and "sometimes" I purchase books on-line, but most of the time I just download them from torrent sites. Plus I really score big with Project Gutenberg. I'll probably change readers eventually when something amazing comes out, but I"m content with my Sony.

on the nintendo DS, with a modded R4 chip, they have book reader in their moonshine program (which also does mp3). It's bear bones, but it works

A dedicated ebook reader is the closest thing to the real deal - not quite the same. Beats reading off the DS or the ipod touch or whatnot... Anyway, I'm selling one right now for 270,000W (just shy of $250) if you're interested. I don't know if it would be worth it for you if you don't really read that much though. I used to spend upwards of 100,000W each time I went to the bookstore here (4-5 books) so it was a HUGE money-saver for me. Plus, it's nice to be able to just read the public domain stuff for free instead of shelling out 10,000W+ for that stuff here.

BTW, how does manga look on an ebook reader?

Back home I read 2-3 books a week. I've been here almost a month and I haven't found a single decent English book, so I ordered a Kindle on Wednesday. Had it shipped to my friend back home and he's shipping it to me. Some of the features don't work over here, but i think you can hack them, and if for some reason you happen to have a lot of PDF books on your computer you could theoretically read them without ever paying a cent beyond the initial $300~ it costs to get a Kindle and have it shipped.

I looked at the Nook and the Sony models but they didn't seem right for me. It really comes down to what you need it for.

I go with illegal torrent downloads and a laptop in a coffee shop. Works wonders!
