I'm guessing at least a handful of Koreans aren't too happy about this movie. Joel and Ethan Coen filmed in the Twin Cities(Minnesota), a movie about a Midwestern college professor whose 1960s home life is upended.
The movie has been nominated for Best Picture. It's mostly about a jewish family and jews are in it throughout with the exception of a Korean boy, his father, and...I've only seen half of it so far.
During the first half you'll see a Korean student twice enter the office of the professor, his father make a visit to the professor's house, a few moments later the student riding his bicylce down the street(watch carefully for this as the scene is very short) wearing something. I won't give away the details and let you know what I thought of it when I'm finished. |

Why would Koreans be upset with this film? I think it portrays Korean culture fairly and accurately. |

You're right. Koreans are all about the truth. |

I watched it till the end, two thumbs up. I think this movie should win the Oscar for Best Picture. I'll state some of what happens in the movie with the Koreans without giving away anything. There's a moment towards the end which gives meaning to the Korean student and father meeting with the Professor.
In the first half of the movie the student goes into the professor's office and asks about his grades. Later, the professor finds a white envelope on his desk. The student has another meeting with the professor and the professor asks about the envelope. The Korean father goes to the professor's house uninvited, I won't say what happens but it's a funny scene.
You'll also see the student riding his bicylce with a mask, mind you this movie takes place in the 1960's. It seemed out of place as do the Koreans in the movie since most other actors depict Jewish people.
The Coen brothers are fantastic! |

Serious Man is far from their best work. The movie was ok but a bit pretentious and its been done before: American Beauty. |

I am not sure if that is a fair comparison, there are parallels to be sure though. I liked it quiet at bit. The scene with the Korean father threatening him was gold. I am not gonna say best picture, I think I liked Up in the Air and Hurt Locker more. Still need to see Precious and Blind Side |

The scenes with the Koreans were funny. I probably would not find them as funny if I didnt live in Korea though. But the Korean scenes were only about 4 minutes of the whole movie. They should make an entire movie with those Korean characters interacting with Americans. Now that would be hilarious. |

Since moving to Korea I find any Asian joke 5x as funny and any Korean joke 10xs as funny. Heck, I think Ken Jeong is comedy gold now and he is merely a Korean American. His role on Community as Senor Chang kills me. |

I'm waiting to see 'A Single Man' by Tom Ford. It hasn't been released on the internet yet. |

This is some tough competition. Avatar was great. Inglourious Basterds was amazing with great acting. The Hurt Locker was great too. So was The Blind Side..pretty tough competition. Personally I would like to see Inglourious Basterds win. |

A Serious Man was seriously irritating, but I did watch the entire movie and I can't say I didn't enjoy it. But I wanted to shake Lawrence Gopnik by the collar and tell him "I didn't do anything" isn't good enough! Cosmic injustice indeed. I found the movie claustrophobic in that the characters in the movie lived such circumscribed lives, such bubble worlds, not unlike many of the people I meet in South Korea. |

I also wanted to slap Gopnick and say " how can you be so gutless? Grow a pair man." |

Hey Gipkik, are you really Gopnik?
Below are some clips. The Korean student riding a bicycle with an H1N1 mask can't be found. If anyone plans to watch it sometime you ought not watch past 5 min. 30 seconds.
