Was told by my co - teacher tday that the after school programme I was doing at another school will be cut in a couple of weeks because of a lack of government funding. Anyone else having similar experiences?

I am devestated it was money for peanuts and got me out of my usual school for a few hours 3 days a week.

I am really going to miss the extra 700,000 a month.

Have to go back to drinking crappy korean beer I guess.

One after school program I teach on, is being scapped at the end of next month, due to resources being allocated elsewhere.

Not sure what is going on here. My school just hired a 2nd foreign teacher and bought loads of LED tvs. They decided to install one of the TVs outside where the students line up for all of 10 minutes a day.

Oh, and I am supposed to teach after school classes along with 4-5 other foreign teachers. We never had this before.

Normal end of the year school year re-budgeting for the new school year semester. If the school hasn't blown their budget, now is the time to blow it all, so it will increase their chances of getting more next year. Pretty standard for any school or corporation with budgets.

The new semester starts in March, for those that aren't in public schools.

Yup same here. SMOE just scrapped all the afterschool programs for the new year. Sucks.

The after school classes that I have been teaching have also been scrapped. I guess they will have to find another use for those shiny new classrooms with the touch screen TVs that only get used for after school English class.

My school had 3 normal teachers. They were there for awhile. Then they built brand new classrooms for each teacher. About a month later two left. Saying they were only going to have one teacher now for all the grades. So the classrooms are just empty all the time now...

I do the afterschool which survived.

Its insane because my after-school classes have been some of the best teaching I've ever done. Way better than the ordinary morning classes.
The money wasn't exactly outstanding but I enjoyed and looked forward to those classes.

But I guess larger TV screens take priority.... Rolling Eyes

They probably found a boatload of principals taking money from recruiters for these. I bet they'll be restructured in some way.

The slow but sure strangle of EPIK and other related program goes on, just like in pre-1997 crash. The market will correct in 2010, and just like in 1997-1998, budgets will be slashed, contracts will not be honored, they will not re-sign your contracts, etc... As personal and social spending cuts decrease in Korea, ESL jobs (especially in hakwans), lots of foreigners will lose jobs and start looking elsewhere or go back home.

Judging from the huge, recent crop of wankers, won't be a great loss. Just like in 1998.
