Hey all, just a quick question about Korean food....
My boyfriend is allergic to shellfish, and is a bit concerned that it might be a staple or hidden ingredient in restaurant fare. I don't remember it being too prevalent on my previous trip there, but I will confess that it was a short trip, and I wasn't really thinking about the contents of my food. Anyone know? If it is, does anyone know of a good website that will teach us how to alert waiters to this in Korean?

Be very concerned. I've asked for "no shellfish" on many occassion only to be served things like noodles cooked in clam water. My discussion with Koreans reveal that most don't think there are any Koreans with such allergies. Once I started talking to Korea medical professionals and other dietitians I found this to be totally not true. I will add that I have asked for "Curry" dishes only to be brought "Kah-day" dishes (clams/muscles). Now I just skip any restaurant that that has a fish or seafood theme. I wish this were not the case. |

I concur with the above poster's statement: "Be very concerned." Is your boyfriend ONLY allergic to shellfish, but not any other type of fish? It's important to remember that shellfish include clams, lobster, shrimp, octopus and squid. My understanding of Korean cuisine is that they add fish oil and/or minced/dried shrimp to a lot of different dishes, including premade side dishes. To be on the safe side, if he is prone to severe reactions, I'd minimize restaurant outings. Food hygiene in most kitchens here is a secondary concern -- you could easily end up with a cross-contaminated dish. |

Yes, you need to be aware that they boil many soups with shellfish, and sometimes they do not tell you when they have shellfish in the ingredients. It can be a problem.
I have a mild allergy to shellfish and sometimes I'll be eating something I think has no shellfish or seafood in it, and then suddenly I'll have an allergic reaction. |

The only allergic reaction that foreigners get in Korea is serious cases of bitterness, and the debby downer syndrome.. |

There's a difference between an intollerance and an actual allergy  |
