What company would you recommend for internet?
What speeds can I expect?
And at what price?
Can I avoid a lengthy contract?
Thanking you in advance. |

Most of the companies are similar in speed and price. It depends on what you can get in the building that you'll be living in. Try to avoid cable if possible as it can get pretty bogged down.
Services range from about 10,000 won and up. A high speed VDSL line is great if your building can support it and shouldn't cost too much (around 30,000 won or less). A long term contract isn't necessary but it'll cost more on a monthly basis.
Overall internet is extremely fast here but when accessing sites from abroad things can take a bit of time as distance and routing tends to slow things down. |

LOL...
No contract options are available. You get a small discount if you sign up for 1 year (about 3k won per month discount).
Speeds on cable are slow (512KB/s) compared to the other options. They are fine for surfing but suck for downloads and torrent seeding.
100Mb/s is common for the various flavors of DLS (adsl, vdsl, etc) (for about 25-30k won per month) and FTTH (gigabit fiber) is available for not a lot more.
The speeds are usually blistering compared to almost anything for home use in the west.
I had KT for more than 5 years and was very happy with the pricing and service. There are others depending on your neighborhood and who has the building you will be living in wired. |

i see that SK Broadband has an English website that explains the costs. LG and KT do not have something similar, in English.
Anybody know if they have English reps at LG Powercom or KT? |

KT does.... just dial "100" (cell or landline) during daytime business hours and listen for English on the menu. |

thanks for the number ttompatz!
a Korean friend of mine just signed up for 3 years with SK for 100MBit/100Mbit for about W30,000 per month. He called 3 different "resellers" I believe, and one of them offered him W220,000 cash if he signed up for 3 years through them. Free install, free modem, plus W220,000 was already wired to his bank account.
Anybody get deals like this? This is first I've heard of such deals, and wonder if the companies themselves have deals / discounts like this. |
