Russia's ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin, warned on Friday that his country will not passively watch the deployment of a U.S. Patriot missile battery in Poland.

The US will supply the Patriots and 100 troops in Poland this year, to be stationed not far from the Russian Kaliningrad border.

"Do they really think that we will calmly watch the location of a rocket system, at a distance of 60 km from Kaliningrad?", the Russian diplomat said Friday.

Rogozin refused to clarify what the response of the Russian side would be to the deployment. "It is a matter for the military," is all he would say.

According to the ambassador, the decision to deploy Patriots in Poland is "reckless".

Rogozin said that Moscow is consulting with Warsaw and Washington on the matter, using both diplomatic and military channels. "We hope that the decision will be reviewed," he stressed.

Last Friday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that he did not understand the plan to deploy Patriot missiles in Poland. Why create the impression that Poland is strengthened [its defences] against Russia?"

Why is the US deploying these weapons 60km from Kaliningrad?

How about corporate welfare. That's the most plausible.

Needen't think Russia does not have surface-to-air missiles in Kaliningrad as well pointing in the opposite direction. Cool

Even without an imminent threat, it would be unrealistic for a nation's armed forces to have no SAM defenses. The US phased out the old single purpose anti-aircraft missiles over a decade ago. The Patriot system is simply the current technology. It can defend against tactical weapons such as aircraft and SRBMs but does not pose any real threat to Russian strategic ICBM forces. This does not go in the same category of the larger ICBM interceptors.

Maybe because Poland is afraid of the USSR and wants the missiles inside its country. After all Poland likes the West a lot more than it likes the Russians

Compared to what the Russians are fielding right now, the Patriot battery is hi-tech.

Why doesn't Poland have the right to have defensive missiles on its territory? I think I missed the memo on that.

Wow. You're incredibly partisan. I remember you bitching about this topic when Bush was in office.

Poland can do what it wants. The United States, being fully completely entirely broke and bogged down with 2 or 3 (4?) wars (Eurasia) might find it advantageous not to irritate the Russians. Remember? The Russians who wanted to coordinate a GSE sell off with the Chinese?

The US has security commitments in Europe and to its new Eastern European allies, many of whom see Russia as a threat. This is especially true after Russia's war with Georgia and many countries bordering Russia right now are home to sizable ethnic Russian communities left over from the Soviet era.

Oh, why didn't you say so before!

Then of course American weapons 60km from Kaliningrad is reasonable. And American soldiers. America has SECURITY COMMITMENTS. Ah. It all makes so much sense now.

I suppose Russia needs to establish security commitments with Mexico and put some of her weapons in Baja California.

The one where Georgia lost her damn mind and invaded Russian territory and started a war? That causing the dumbass American War Party to support Georgia (with full cheerleading from the establishment media) thereby angering the Russians who made the first shot at covert economic warfare.

If the Ruskies want to play games with Iran, I see no reason we can't play games with Poland. There are more pro-Moslems in Russia than there are pro-Russians in Poland.

Down the road, there can be some quid pro quos. A little flexibility with sanctions in Iran, a little flexibility with missiles in Poland. In the meantime, ask the Chinese what they say about foreign devils meddling in domestic affairs.

What? What absurd logic. Go dust off your map. Look at the proximity of Russia to Iran. You want Russia to be a Yankee puppet and join your tantrum about a nuclear program that doesn't exist?

I can think of two reasons: Our nation is broke and our military is incompetent.
