Winter Olympics very soon...
Kim Yu-Na starts as a deserving and strong favorite to win a skating gold medal. She faces competition from some very capable Japanese skaters. She should win but victory is not the formality some people would have you believe...

i never saw her when she was supposedly a student of mine.

I can't imagine the amount of stress she's under to succeed. She raked in close to $10 million in sponsorships last year, basically making her the Tiger/MJ of Korean sports. The entire country is behind her, but if she blows it she'll see how quickly the tide can turn.
Thankfully, she's probably spent enough time overseas training with an international crowd that she's been deprogrammed from the K-celebrity mentality and won't jump off a building if she fails to bring home the gold. |

I just read an article about how her coach is keeping almost all media away from her, and definitely all Korean media. She said that she could never train in Korea and after the competition in Korea a few months back she criticized the fans here and said she would never compete at home again. That is when I decided to root for her.
I want her to do well, but let's be honest. Even if she falls 5 times, Korean netizens will say it was unfair and threaten the winner and judges. And of course the winner will likely be Japanese in that case, so it would be interesting/sad to see what would happen. I might see some of it, I'll be visiting home at the time and my mom loves figure skating. |

She certainly has no qualms about having her face plastered all over everything in Korea, though! |

The Korean Post Office is issuing Olympic stamps on Feb 12, and she's on one of the stamps. Yeah, that's pressure. |

All she has to do is fire one up with her Canadian coach, that should relax her. When she falls it will be his fault unless many Korean fans attend that don't know how to cheer for the sport. |

Whatever that may be, can we get a photographer to take crotch shots of her like the Korean media takes of non-Korean female athletes and paste them on front pages of sports pages and Internet? |

I can understand the negative comments...the Olympics and nationalism and all...but just the same...I wouldn't wish her any ill will just because of Korean nationalistic zeal.
Nationalism makes me ill no matter what country it's coming from.
Besides, she's hardly playing the any strong nationalistic card...as she is training in Canada and has admitted to needing the international support...good on her.
I've seen her in a few interviews and she comes off as humble and hard working.
I hope she performs at her best, and if she does, that would likely result in a gold medal.
I know the Olympic games are about more than just individual effort, but should she win the gold...good for her...as a person. |

I fear she may have peaked too early. I think a silver or gold will be acceptable with the Korean populace. But any placing in the medals guarantees her a nice regular government income for the rest of her life.
I hope she wins gold, so she can pad that bank account of hers with another 20 or so billion more won. She'll need the money because I doubt her academics are up to par. |
