I was talking with some friends who also teach ESL last night and they suggested that it's easier to be a single Western man here than a single Western woman - Western men have an easier time dating Koreans than Western women have of finding a Korean partner. And usually Western men are interested in Korean women, so a Western woman looking to date a Western guy is probably out of luck.

What do you guys think? Is this true or BS?

If your hot, you don't have a problems. If you look like Delta Burke, then maybe you aren't going to have much luck.

Its that simple.

Heaps of western girls get really fat when they come to Korea. Atleast half of the girls I knew gained a large amount of weight. That is why I was never interested in any.

I see lots foreign women here who remain single throughout their whole contract. A lot of them are quite attractive, and even the average-looking ones should definitely have no trouble finding a boyfriend.

There could be lots of reasons why they're single, really.

- Some might only be interested in foreign men.

- If they happen to want a foreign man, maybe they're standards are too high. They want the dudes who are getting constant attention from the local women.

- They might not be interested in internet dating. Some women just have too much pride to search online, or they might be afraid, which makes sense, I suppose.

- They might assume that all Korean men are really possessive, bossy, whatever.

- They're too social for their own good. Let me explain. I know this social butterfly who can't find a boyfriend, yet she goes out almost every Thursday, Friday, Saturday with her huge group of friends. No guy, foreigner or Korean, wants to approach her because she's never alone from her entourage.

At first I meant this as a joke, but now when I think of it, this might work. Before you come over, buy a Starcraft shirt and start wearing it. Perhaps any Blizzard shirt will do, but you'll have the best luck with Starcraft. Korean guys will have an excuse to talk to you. Just explain that you've just started playing, and would like to know more about the game.

I'm sure that wearing a geeky computer game shirt is against your style. (I love computer games and rock and roll, but I'd never wear either of those sort of tee shirts.) But trust me, it won't kill you to wear one on a trip to the mall or something.

Best of luck.

Most of the foreign women I've seen here cannot compete with Korean women. But some of the Korean guys I've met here would not mind switching it up.

I'll break it down.

Korean women types:

1. Poppy: Constantly laughing, bubbly, attention span=0. They are one pop song away from changing their life.
-Approach at your own risk, these types are very good at the giggle, turn and run, so any initial interaction should not be serious on any level. Tell them you are a pop star in Africa, lol.

2. Artsy: Carrying some camera that has 3 pictures of a flower, a coffee cup on a table, and a cloud. That's it. Very similar to all that is in their minds.
-Any artsy girl, foreign or Korean is bitchy by nature. Treat these girls with respect, maybe show some vulnerability.

3. Intelligent: the gold mine. Decent English, educated, fills out a pair of jeans.
-These are the good ones, but it's all about where you approach these. They are ready for you at bars. Cafes, subway, bookstores are good laces to approach. The key is to not think about what you'll say. Just go.

Foreign women types

1. Sorority Girl: The english teacher market has seen a flood of these because they have a nice picture. We're all college grads here, so I think we know about them. See: K women 'Poppy'.
-Ugh, I've had to meet a few of these lately. The sad part is that the only 'game' they know is still just the 'quiz'. Where did you go to school, where is that, who is the mascot? They know the answers, but think you are lying. NEXT!

2. Fat or Ugly: carrying a few pounds around the waist, acne or bad hair, dumpy rear end. No thanks.
-Every fat girl has a hot friend because they are their linemen. Your call here boys.

3. Cool Chick: She'll watch an action movie with you, grab a beer or cocktail if it's a Saturday, not looking for any super attachment, might just want to be friends, which is ok. Decent figure, maintains femininity.
-Just tell them you got lost driving through NYC and you popped up here. Buy her a drink and tell her she has listen to you until she finishes the drink, so don't 'one shot' it.

Last thing. Don't mess with a K girl that is married or has a serious BF. You don't need to. Personally I don't mess with any girl that has had a black ex-bf. Nothing against the bros, but once you go black...don't bother coming back!

And thats my quick thing. It's kind of a generalization, maybe more entertainment than substance, but, eh, whatever.

A bit offtopic but I think we need a dating sticky in the general forums, we get an awful lot of dating threads... although I have a feeling it'll end up becoming a "male teachers have yellow fever-female teachers are fat and ugly-well male teachers are fat and ugly too" flame sticky.

I know of quite a few girls who have found success dating Korean men. I suppose one of them is hotter than average. One of them is getting married to her man soon.

So, just depends on fate, randomness, chance perhaps?

But then again, I generally say I see more Western fellas with Korean girlfriends. Not a big issue.

If anyone wants anything, they'll find it no prob. Wink

If they did that, I wouldn't mind moderating it.

Dont forget the XFactor: United States Forces Korea. Any foreign woman no matter what she looks like can get all the action she can handle from the GIs.
I have heard many GIS say that if it werent for Canadian teacher chicks here, they would have no one to date.

I don't understand that. GIs are generally more fit than English teachers. And any perceived lack of education or social graces or whatever else people like to disparagingly say about the military, well, I don't think a Korean girl with basic English is going to care or pick up on it too much.

Maybe they're just smarter than me and don't want to put up with the all the headaches of dating locals.

Actually, World of Warcraft is one of my favorite games. I've been looking to buy one of those WoW shirts from JINX for a while.

never got into starcraft but I bet once Starcraft 2 comes out in Korea the whole country will shut down. Laughing

Thanks for the responses. I'm not averse to dating a Korean guy, but not sure how to approach one? Now I know what it must feel like to be a guy and trying to make the first move. LOL.

I don't think I'm fat. I'm not Angelina Jolie, but I look OK, I think.

It just seems like it's a lot easier for a Western guy to find a Korean girlfriend, than for a Western girl to find a Korean boyfriend. IDK.

Out of curiousity, why do you say that?
