|
|
Any ballpark figures on how much this will cost? My friend's 15-inch laptop fell on the floor and cracked the screen in several places. Anyone ever get something like this repaired in Korea, and if so how much did it cost?
I'm pretty confident in replacing this myself, so how about just getting a generic 15-inch LCD and popping it in? Or do I need to get specific brands/parts for her type of laptop?
Cheers! |

Can you tell us the make and model of the laptop? It would make it easier to answer the question. |

forget it - the cost will far outweigh the price and pain-in-the-a$$ of just buying a new laptop |

Martypants, I don't think so. Have you seen the outrageous prices for laptops in Korea???!!
So after doing some searching I found that each make and model need a specific part. Ulmaeri, it's an Averatec AV6700. Although the LCD replacement sites on the web don't list it (as most of those sites are geared toward US and EU models), I'm sure I can find it in Korea for ~150,000, as the US Averatec 15-inche models are ~$100. |

Looks like a straight forward procedure and should take about 15 minutes, so not anything close to a pain.
If 15-minutes of your time is worth $1000 (the starting price of a decent laptop in this country), and you don't mind blowing that to replace an otherwise functional laptop, fair enough. Unfortunately I'm not in that position and neither is my friend. |

It will be a pain in the ass. I guaran-damn-tee it. If you have the tools and expertise to do it yourself, then you probably don't need the advice of the slack jawed yokels around here. "It looks like a 15 min job", are famous last words from the dawn of time.
Anyways, just my 10won. Tell us how you get on. |

Just and update on this to anyone that's interested.
One notebook repair place wanted 140 including installation. Then we came across a guy whose shop specialized in LCD panels and he wanted 130 for installation or 110 for the screen. Haha.. he didn't quite believe me when I said I could do it myself, but sold it to me anyway. Nice guy and great prices. If anyone's looking for LCD replacements go to the Seon-In Plaza, far-right door, first shop on your right.
So, total cost: W110,000
Total time: 30 minutes installing.
Hellofalot better than god-knows what a new laptop would have cost.

Hi Kryten, this thread is amazing for me right now! My bloody screen cracked on the plane on the way here and 220,000 Won later I'm left with a great monitor but a laptop acting as a desktop...
JUst one question, where is the Seoul-In Plaza? |

My first notebook had a kickbutt 17 inch screen. When it died Sony wanted 1mil won to replace it. That is when I went out and bought a full desktop computer for 1mil won This was like 5 years ago.
Glad to see screens are cheaper these days. |

Hi! Where is Seon-In Plaza (what station?)
I'd like to visit this person as well.
(Did you have to buy a screen yourself?) |

Kabrams, Seon-In Plaza is near Yongsan station. See here:

And here (wait for the image to load)
If you've ever been to Yongsan before then I'm sure you know where the row of green DVD stands are. If you follow that, you'll reach the entrance to the Seon-In Plaza. It's a ramp usually filled with vendors selling stuff. If you walk up the ramp, go in the right-most door and the LCD store I mentioned will be the first store on your right.

Not quite sure what you mean here. Yes, I did pay for it myself. If you show the guy your laptop he'll tell you exactly which screen you need and he can install it for you. |

I meant did you have to find the laptop screen yourself at another store and bring it there for him to install. But I'm guessing he has screens there?
Was it done all on the same day or did you have to go back? (I know you said it took 30 min, but I'm wondering if you had to make an appointment to get it fixed.)
Thanks!
Thank you for the directions!! |
