Hello!
This is my first post so please be patient!
I'm a newbie esl teacher waiting to start my first job on the Epik programme in Busan. As such I'm really conflicted about what to do regarding accommodation options when I get there. Obviously the easy option would be to just take what I'm given, but I've heard that the places they assign you are not always particularly great, and furthermore that its very difficult/impossible to swap to the accommodation allowance afterwards.
Ideally then I would like to find somewhere myself, and would probably be happier topping up the rent a bit if it meant getting a slightly better place (I'm a bit older than the average newbie esl teacher and so will prob spend a bit more time at home than other, younger teachers).
However I don't really have any clue of how to do this, and have a number of questions that might help me make a decision.
I'll number the questions so any answers are easier to understand!
1. How much is the accommodation allowance?
2. If I take the accommodation allowance will the scheme give me any key money as well?
3. How difficult is it to arrange something myself, obviously given that I'm going to be completely new to Korea and have no Korean language skills (yet!)?
4. Where would I start looking, and
5. where could I live in the interim?
6. How much would a reasonable 1 bed or decent studio be?
Just so people don't think I'm totally unrealistic, I know roughly what to expect, I just get the impression that (although they will all be fairly broadly similar in size, etc) if you want the slightly nicer end of the scale of what's available you would do better to take the allowance and look yourself.
Any help really appreciated, please feel free to offer advice on anything else you feel may benefit me too!

Ok, I'm in Busan and have found a house on for my second year. I can help a little bit.
The average key money or down payment would be around 5,000,000 Won or 5,000 dollars.
If you take the allowance money the school will NOT give you the key money. Or at least, thats what my school told me.
It might be quite hard to find housing by yourself without the help of a Korean. Maybe your co-teacher could help you. I would check on the internet but mostly real estate agents don't post their listing on the internet.
So maybe you would have to start looking when you get here. You could do some quick internet searches.. thats actually where I found my apartment. You will need to pay a agent fee as well. Mine was 300,000WON or 300 dollars. My apartment is a one room office tel. A nice loft for my bed upstairs and a nice downstairs living room / kitchen area.
In the meanwhile, if you're serious about looking for a house you could live in a love motel maybe. It really depends how much money you can bring with you.

Hey Sharkey thanks for the info, seeing as I don't have a spare 5 grand (and wouldn't give it over not knowing how I'm gonna get on in korea anyway!), I suppose I'll be taking what I'm given!
Any hints or tips you may have on living and working in Busan would be greatly appreciated though! I take it you must like it if you've stayed another year? Whats good/bad? |
