While I think this is a fair characterization, I also think that over time, things learned purely by rote often devolve into cliff notes in your memory. There's just too much to know to retain complete knowledge regarding things you often don't use. Most of my memory of history, for instance, has collapsed into cliff notes in my mind. It's only critical thinking that allows me to reconstruct as much as I can.

| I think the big thing is that 'back in time' people would talk about things relating to education. Working class folks would go home and read their Classics. Now its Sportscenter and whatnot. People used to memorize Shakespeare and the Bible. Now its sports stats. |
I do think this is a valid point. There's just so much easy entertainment availible that it's hard to work up the initative to engage yourself intellectually. Right now my primary intellectual interests are studying Korean, studying Japanese and learning Kanji (I just began this), learning about economics, and reading ancient Greek plays. None the less, every evening it takes real effort to pull myself away from casually persusing the internet or playing video games and engaging in these topics. It's just too easy to fall into a pattern of killing time. I can't really blame the average person for just falling completely into the trap of easy entertainment. |
