Trying to set my plans for next year or two, and had a couple quick questions about university jobs in Korea - I would really appreciate a little feedback.
First of all, could I even be considered for a uni job? Right now I teach English lit as an adjunct in an nyc community college. I have a Masters in creative writing and I did a year in a hagwon in Incheon in 07-08 (that experience is the reason I want to switch to uni)
Would having a TEFL make a measurable difference in that regard?
Also, I understand the Korean school year starts in Feb/March. Do universities hire people to start second semester (July I think)?
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! |

Good for you that you have the MA.
Your resume might not get you interviews at the top 10-12 universities in Seoul but it should allow you to at least get seen at some of the lower tier unis.
If you can bear to live outside Seoul then the situation would be much brighter.
Doing a Tesol cert won't kill you and in some circumstances might help you though that's not guaranteed as Tesol qualifications are only now beginning to count a little.
Better unis will want more experience and particularly more Korean uni experience.
If you didn't have the MA it would be very difficult for you, but because you do, I'd be quite confident.
So to sum up:
Unigwons - should be no problem...
Third and possibly second tier unis in Seoul - a fighting chance at least...
Unis outside Seoul, much better prospects...
Good luck! |
