so... my wife and I are off for 2 weeks staying in Korea(not travelling abroad).
any suggestions as to what or where to go? we have a car so feel free to advise any place in S.Korea.
only serious posters please? I've seen too many post-hijackers exercising their false right to exploit others' posts, sacrificing our time on the altar of their own agenda.
thus said... i appreciate any helpful info in advance.
regards.

Despite all the naysayers here I really enjoy travelling around Korea...cheap, frequent and clean transportation, lots of places to stay in for cheap plus in the countryside the food is usually delicious.
I have travelled all over Europe and Korea and while the attractions are not quite as outstanding there are still many very interesting things to see and do.
I have been to every province in Korea several times...the only 2 things I really want to do that I have left on my list are go to Ulleungdo and do the DMZ tour.
My top 10 in no particular order
1. Chungju Lake that surrounds Damyang
2. Boseong Tea Plantation and Nagan Folk Village near Boseong in Jeollanamdo.
3. Geoje Island and Tongyong..actually all the south coast islands are awesome.
4. Independence Museum of Korea near Cheonan.
5. The mountains of Gangwon do - Seorak, Taebeak, Odea and Chiak.
6. Udo island off Jeju
7. Daedunsan near Daejeon..the sky bridge and ladder are awesome.
8. Haeinsa temple an hour west of daegu.
9. Gyeongju - ride a bike from the city centre around the lake to Bulguksa and back..40 kms and a half day trip.
10. 3 day, 50 kmtr, 8 peaks hike along the ridge of Jirisan national park.
That is off the top of my head.... |

just got back from Gangwon-do yesterday, wow... beautifull area...ventured near the DMZ pick-up points and later went to Everland(was way too cold though), and Yong-in Folk village.
had a really great weekend.
will check out Coral99's suggestions...
a per previous poster's note... i'm not into the McGyver stuff... just need to walk around and take in the beauty and a few pic's... may take on ski-ing and hiking later on... been a couch potatoe for too long and may need to exchange the remote for some Timberland hiking boots or something.. hehe.
thanks for the great replies guys/gals.

Check out Korea's tourism web site for information on places to see and upcoming special events.
http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/index.kto
On the left hand side, look under "Essential Information" for: "Korea Travel Hotline 1330" and "Volunteer Tour Guides.
With the 1330 number and a pre-paid phone, you always have a "virtual" Korean companion traveling with you. The call desk is available 24 hours, 7 days a week to help you with translation and tourist questions.
Volunteer Tour Guides are folks willing to offer translation and sightseeing help for free. When you come up with a location and itinerary, email a request for a volunteer guide and arrange a meeting place to start your day. If the guide spends the day with you and your group uses public transportation, your only cost is treating them to meals and paying their fare. |

Offhand I would recommend...
Suwon City Wall ( Not the Great Wall of China of course, but the next best that I have ever seen in that genre)
Busan ( different culture than Seoul, 2nd biggest city, nice beach)
Gwangjuu (very historical, as far as S. Korea goes decent sites)
Very generic suggestions I think, but they are the places I've liked the most. Plus the general Seoul attractions:
Seoul Tower
Myeongdong (Seoul's version of Shinjuku, eseentially)
Have you considered taking the KTX to Busan? You have a car but - would the 186mph train ride be of interest?
Or...the tea plantation/bamboo forest tour in the southern part of S. Korea. Sorry to be so vague - I didn't book it, perhaps someone else can help. |
