She should've been watching where she was going instead of looking at her cell phone. No sympathy! Twisted Evil

And I guess Americans or Westerners WOULD NEVER do that, right?

While living in Korea there isn't any thing that I'm overly cautious about except ONE thing: Crosswalks.

Either as a pedestrian or as a vehicle operator (motorcycle and car), I am extra cautious when I come to a crosswalk around here. That car and the little girl are prime examples as to why since both were to blame.

Crosswalks don't work that way in Asia, cars have the right of way over pedestrians unless you specifically have a "walk" signal

I'm not implying anything racist. I was talking about the girl. Her nationality has nothing to do with it.

btw, your attempt to incite a racism-fueled "discussion" is fail.

Seen that many times. People put their head down while crossing the road.
I stop at zebra crossings and drivers over take me while children are crossing.
What Korea needs is some TV ads by the Transport Ministry showing how stupid driving can result in terrible tragedies with graphic details.

Er...no.

Quote:
(7) Pedestrians have the highest priority on the road

Owner of the road is not the cars, it is the pedestrians. Always have the attitude to protect them as if they are the members of your own family.

Pedestrian's actions are not as prompt as the driver would expect, thus it is best to slow down when they appear.

When a pedestrian is crossing the cross walk, stop at the stop line for not to interfere or threaten the pedestrian.

Even in the event of proceeding along the vehicle signal, it shall not be interfered with pedestrian who crossing the cross walk.

Do not interfere when pedestrian is crossing the crosswalk or nearby road with no traffic light or crossing signal.

Pass slowly with the safe distance when passing pedestrians in the narrow street without the driveway and when pedestrians are in the safe area installed on the driveway.

When small children crossing the intersection or playing in alley without the parent's supervision, or when the visually impaired or other disabled crossing the road, take appropriate action for safety or stop.

Be aware that sometimes the disabled person may cross under the overpass or over and on the underground.

Be cautious when the two way street has frequent passing of pedestrians and children may running out of the space between the parked cars.

It's not about race, it's about cultural habits.

I saw this video as a classic perfect storm of Korean road culture:

1. Someone crossing without looking left or right.

2. Someone flying onto the pedestrian crossing and not stopping in time (I find this happens around 30-50% of the time I cross a road here.)

Both of these = the accident in the video.

A similar thing happened to me. We were in a car being driven by our Korean friends father. A girl on a bike went straight across the road without even bothering to look, and the driver, who also wasn't checking his peripheral vision (surprise, surprise) hit her and knocked her off her bike. His daughter proceeded to say
'it's ok, it's not our fault, she wasn't looking where she was going.'
Uuuh she was 10 years old and your dad's a 55 year old.

OK, I'll swallow the apologist/cultural relativist troll bait.

In my whole life I have never experienced anyone getting run over on a crossing. Since I came to Korea two years ago, I've seen it once and nearly been a victim of it once:

A stopped truck was blocking my view to the last lane of traffic as I was crossing, luckily I thought to stop and poke my head around the truck to check that dreaded last lane. A Korando drove past at about 50mph and would have killed me instantly had I kept walking across the road that had a green man flicking.

Page won't load Sad

I give drivers the stare of death if I think they aren't going to stop. I've even kicked a few cars heh. But you definatley have to look. That is why they teach it to you when your a baby. Look left, look right, look left again.

Whooo... that's pretty intense. I saw a woman in front of us walking in a parking lot with a car going by us slowly negotiating a tight squeeze. Neither felt intimidated enough by the other to stop and wait. Result: woman had her foot ran over slowly, and the driver had to get out, apologize profusely, give up her ID, and then I'm not sure.
