Yesterday, my public school announced that I was getting a raise plus back pay because my school has been designated rural. First of all, I don't understand why it is rural. It has many roads and a subway line nearby, lots of busses. Also, why would it out of nowhere be classified rural?

Must be some government classified thing. Why argue? You may have been paying a bit more for various things out there without knowing it.

Haha! I'm not arguing! I'm just curious, especially since a school, literally, blocks away has not changed it's status.

I smell manure when I walk past a farm on my way to school. Why aren't I rural?

My guess is that the designation is entirely on paper. It's like how the city of Ottawa includes many rural areas, just because of the way it's governed.

Rural-ness of school can be:
rural surroundings
or school area maybe economically depressed
or your school provides afternoon classes without student fee for such things as
English, dance, piano, violin, art etc.
or like my school; public transportation is terrible!
Outside, it's snowing heavily and soon we'll be Shang-gri-la once more.

So does this general mean that rural schools will have a higher pay then urban schools?

Yes, a designated-rural school pays 100,000 won/month more and
5 more days of holiday.

Note: it's iff it is a DESIGNATED-rural school. A school can be in Dokdo and not be a designated rural school.

At GEPIK orientation Dain Bae refused to tell us the list of rural schools because "it would upset the schools." Rolling Eyes

That's understandable. A school in an undesirable area, whether the school is good or bad, the school is called a 'septic tank'. (literal translation)
Migration of people to cities continue, and loss of population makes places 'seem' undesirable.
It's terribly unfair to the good schools having to bear the brunt of reputation of the school area.

I talked to an alumnus of my school today at graduation and apparently my school has lost 90% of its enrollment over the years.

The parents in my parents class frequently say that they want their kids to go to school in the city because it would give them a better education.

My school is very rural and is so small that I dont think the kids could get a better education anywhere in the public school system.

Parents in America would kill for the class size and individual attention that the students get at my school and our resources arent far behind the super-funded schools that I've visited in the cities.
