The grammar mistakes in your post are embarrassing, perhaps you should go back to class - maybe shawner88 will teach you.

Actually, I use the same puzzles for my third grade elementary classes. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't use them for middle school kids though. I don't know your middle school students Shawner so I won't criticise you. I find that there is very little in the way of material for students below fifth grade elementary level. Flash cards, chants, and games are the way to go for those kids. I must add that I write down the Korean word for them so they actually know what a turtle is for example.

Well, as much as I fantasize about it, I'm not going to put on a cape and fly into the classroom as Super Teacher. I'm going to to do what works...what keeps the kids in control, content. The kids are content with puzzles. They like them. I could really care less if they learn anything or not. Sorry, that may sound crude, but it's the truth.

Have you ever listened to kids working on a word find? Or do you just sit in the corner with the newspaper?

I thought they were a great time-waster until one day I heard two students working together. "A-E-G-...I can't find it!" "Because it's E-A-G-L-E, isn't it?"

You really can review your spelling and phonics words. Especially if you make it yourself, by hand, and include relevant distractors. And if I used the word find shared by the OP, I would white-out the word list and expand the questions at the bottom. Make the kids WORK for the words. They still think it's fun!

Edit: Let me add something else.

These type of puzzles, which students can complete independently and, theoretically, in silence, are a wonderful classroom management tool for testing situations. Not only do you have something to keep the early completers busy, but you have an incentive for everyone to finish the test and not linger over it.

Word puzzles are good for vocabulary as well. If you give the same set of word puzzles to all your classes learn the Korean for the words. That might make the exercise more meaningful, and you could use it as a feedback for the use of the words in a Korean context

Sometimes it's a good way to find out who the bright students are since they usually finish first.

Word searches have a place in the classroom, and so do other games, but it should be a supplement to the class- not the focus. Shawner, you blame the Korean teachers for permitting the student's bad behaviour. Why not take a little responsibility. Technically you're a teacher too.

If his boss doesn't take the time to find out what goes on in his classes then the boss probably doesn't care and doesn't mind paying for the kids to be dicking around. At any rate, let's dispense with the moral grandstanding. Perhaps some of us could not justify spending an entire class on a word search, but who are we to judge? I wonder if the ones getting so inflated over this are "real" teachers themselves. Can we have that tired old debate again too?

Have you tried teaching middle school kids? Once they get out of control, there is no returning...although only teaching them once a week they behave much better for me that that poor guy. He looks like he's going to die at any moment.

Hey great to hear all the positive feedback about puzzles. Now I don;t feel so bad being known as the puzzle teacher in the hagwon. "Puzzle time, assa!") The kids just love these things. I don't know how I survived without them.

I generally teach adults, but during school breaks I usually end up teaching a few kids classes, and yes, middle schoolers can be rough. They generally don't walkover you unless you let them.

I make it clear from the begining that I speak enough Korean to be offended if they address me in Ban mal, and that I am not gonna put up with the usual disrespect they show to foreign teachers. If they behave well, then they get a game.
