I was trying to explain to someone what exactly popular music was like here. I said "imagine the spice girls, but younger, and more of them."

And I was trying to think of what a 'hot new artist' comparison would be, and I though of this:

the difference in originality, skills etc is enormous.

Anybody come up with more comparisons?

Korean culture is all about being the same as everyone else. That's why there is, and will always be....VERY LITTLE ORIGINALITY AND CREATIVITY IN KOREA.

p.s. The capital letters denotes me roaring at the top of my lungs, so all the koreans in my neighborhood can hear me. ARRRRRGHHHHHH!

There's some crappy K-pop, but a good K-pop song is much better than this. This song reminds me of a bunch of hipsters ironically trying to outnerd each other at some trendy party. Anything that reminds me of the art crowd, I keep my distance from it. Just the way it is.

A lot of K-pop's pretty good actually. I wouldn't buy a CD but if I hear certain songs playing, I enjoy them. As for American pop, I hate each and every last song. British pop was great in the 80's. Human League 'Don't You Want Me' is a classic. Flock of Seagulls are good too.

Oh yeah American Rock and some pop was great up until the 80's. Some of the 90's stuff sounded good, but I didn't like the attitude.

Maybe you are just very familiar with the UK pop scene while not much so with the Korean counterpart? I lack the ability to judge originality but "skills, etc"?

For one, I think this 17 year old girl IU has a great potential.

To be fair, there has been a constant stream of absolute tosh from the UK pop scene in recent years. S Club 7, Girls Aloud, and various other reality show contestants.

I see no difference between this tosh and the tosh that is blasted out of most shops in my local city.

Her dress reminds me of those silly dresses in the new T-ara video, in the group singing/dancing scenes... tight, black, 80's, makes you look extra skinny. Hmm maybe I'll start liking them? I dunno.

I kind of like the song in this video.

I think UK pop nowadays is getting better and better, stuff like JLS and Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis (seems popular here) and Alexandra Burke have some catchy tunes between them. I would never buy them in a million years but all the same...

The Spice Girls changes it all though. Before them we had D-Ream, Eternal, Pet Shop Boys, M-People, Ace of Base and all the rest of it. Stuuf you could actually listen to.

Kpop - sorry but it just isnt my deal. Massive across Asia however.

No. Both suck massively! Music is (well, it used to be) for the ears. If you can't close your eyes and appreciate the talent you hear, it ain't music. Please bring the singers and players back. Please?
