Anyone else love this show?
It's tied with the Sopranos for being my #1 favorite. Every single character on that show is great. The show is better than any movie, because there is more of a chance for the plot and the characters to develop at their own pace instead of a few lines here to establish these characters, a few there to advance this part of the plot, etc. I bought the entire series on DVD. Hard to say which season in the best because they're all good in their own right. I still haven't seen 5 yet, I'm finishing 4.
I have to say, nothing on television ever affected me as Frank Sobotka's story in season 2. That seriously depressed me.
Also, I hate Marlo with a passion. Sometimes I want to go into the TV and beat him with a lead pipe. |

He had his moments as a lovable f-up...the seeing eye duck/attorney with the diamond necklace? "That bird couldn't hold his liquor for shiiiiiit...."
I hold The Wire above The Sopranos for a number of reasons...one being that I'm pretty sure it's the only modern drama to never have a dream sequence.
I'm not much of a boxset bully, but I'll push this show on people 'til the day I die. |

yeah, it's amazing. I'm midway through season 3, just watched the episode where at the end Avon finds out what Stringer did and they have a fight.......brilliant ending.
I find I have to concentrate quite hard on each episode to figure what's being said a lot of the time, but it's worth it.
Fav character so far....... Bunk Moreland. Legend. |

It's hard to choose between The Wire and The Sopranos. When I watched the Wire, I thought it was the best show ever. Now I've started watching The Sopranos again, I'm not so sure.
The Wire's strength and weakness is it's realism. It is so bleak and mostly humourless. The scope of the show is broader than the Sopranos, but the Sopranos has much more memorable characters.
I'd have to call it a tie. |

I prefer the Wire for its scope and its vision. They really had a plan from the start. Its also the only show that I would evangelize for and I noticed when I got other people hooked they would do the same. It is a deep, deep show laid out more like a novel than a typical tv show. |

it was good but not as good as the shield was, in my opinion. way better than sopranos, though. |

not as good as the shield? Seriously?? The Shield is unrealistic, overly dramatic crap. |

Sopranos were more immediately entertaining but due to the way that The Wire was written, there was room for more intricacies in plot and character development. Sopranos is still damn good though and it's funny as hell. Paulie Walnuts cracks me up every time and so does Junior.
Both shows are really good social commentaries.
Someone mentioned Bunk Moreland. He's probably my favorite police character in the show. Another one of my favorite characters is Cutty, the guy who opens a boxing gym after he realizes that he doesn't want to be in the dope game anymore. |

Just picked the full 5 season set for 210 kuai (40 kuai New Year's discount!). Love how instead of the B'more harbor the locals put Sydney, Australia on the cover.
Watching this show is making me flip, hearing all the Maryland place names again after years since being there. My roommate was born and raised on the Eastern Shore, and he's all cracked out on it, too. Man, East Coast style is crazy, its amazing how much crap we talk on each other all the time.
I definitely feel this strange kinship with Detective McNulty, and I feel his demons: too much spirit, not knowing when to stfu, too arrogant and clever for his own good. I'm rooting for him to overcome himself, and its very personal.
Watching Season #2 now. Why is it I felt more sympathy for the Project people than I do the Union people? |

Unions are the real gangsters. They have far more power and influence, and do a lot more damage than poor folk in the projects. |

Yeah I'm only like four episodes into season 2 and I want to smack the **** out of Ziggy. So obnoxious, he's like the Jar Jar Binks of crime drama. |

Love this show also. I've watched the whole series three times and will do so again this year I think. The show's producer David Simon said they considered doing a sixth season on the influx of Latinos into Baltimore but decided against it because of the lack of their writing staff's knowledge on the subject.
Has anyone seen the miniseries the Corner (also by David Simon)? If you haven't I seriously recommend it. David Simon was also the produer of the miniseries Generation Kill which was also excellent. |

I've seen the Wire three times now. I might give it a few years before I watch it again. I used to get annoyed when people brought up "The Shield" in "The Wire" threads. But I gave it a try in the Xmas vacation and slogged through the whole thing in about three weeks. It's not as consistently strong as the Wire and doesn't really hang together as a whole, like the Wire does so satisfyingly, but it is very solid, and has a killer ending. A far more satisfying and shocking conclusion than the Wire. |

I've mentioned it before and I'll say it again, any big David Simon fan/Baltimore crime arc fan should get a torrent of Homicide:Life on the Street, especially seasons 1-3. A lot like The Wire but with better acting and better chemistry amongst the actors. And as someone mentioned, The Corner is definitely worth a view, maybe more so than The Wire. With The Corner when you're watching the show you're like "man, I know someone just like that, through and through."
McNulty ruined the show. He's a rip off of Detective Falsone of Homicide's 7th season, which ruined the show. |
