It's that time of year again, and the "Couv" is the winner!
"Canadian and Australian cities account for seven of the top ten spots in the Economist Intelligence Unit's latest liveability ranking. Vancouver (Canada) continues to top the Economist Intelligence Unit's global liveability survey with a score of 98%, which bodes well for visitors during the Winter Olympics this year."
Top 10 cities
1 Canada Vancouver 98.0
2 Austria Vienna 97.9
3 Australia Melbourne 97.5
4 Canada Toronto 97.2
5 Canada Calgary 96.6
6 Finland Helsinki 96.2
7 Australia Sydney 96.1
8 =Australia Perth 95.9
8 =Australia Adelaide 95.9
10 New Zealand Auckland 95.7
58 South Korea Seoul

Vancouver has a really bad crime rate, especially theft. It's basically not safe to park your car there because someone will break in and steal your stuff. Lots of prostitutes and heroin addicts there too.
Seattle is basically the American version of Vancouver, and it's a much cleaner, safer, and better place to live, IMHO. |

Vancouver can be deceiving. I lived in the Couv for a year and a half, got my bike stolen a couple of times, saw beggars and homeless people everywhere, hookers and drug addicts galore, Asian gang violence, graffiti, deinstitutionalized mental patients aplenty, huge gay and lesbian populations. Parts of the city are incredible, but other parts are downright scary. |

I'm sorry, but you have to knock down some of these cities simply because of the cold climate. You just have to. |

That's amazing, considering how many of those nationalities are living over here |

Ha! I thought that would rile someone up. I just don't enjoy watching men kiss each other in public and lesbian women grimace and shout at me for no reason. Sorry. Otherwise, I couldn't care less.
Oh, and for the record, I'm not a fan of heterosexual couples making out in public either. |

Vancouver is a really fun city to visit but it is dirty as hell and there are more bums in Vancouver than any city I've ever been in. There are hobos everywhere trying to sell you their dog crap weed. Vancouver should be far, far, far from #1. As an above poster said, Seattle is a much safer and more livable city with the same Northwest/Pacific coast feel as Vancouver. |

What defines livability? One mans paradise is another mans hell and vice-versa. I think that Seoul is pretty sweet.
Vancouver is scary? Seriously? They have that rough patch on the eastside, but outside of that it seems pretty affluent and safe. I remember some crackhead asking me for money -I said no and he followed me, so I told him to f off and he went away. Worst I've ever seen there.
Halifax has the highest violent crime rate in Canada. For murders it's usually Winnipeg or Regina.
Halifax is bad. I almost got killed a month after I got back and I have the scar on my neck to prove it. Two people have been murdered in the past week. While I was gone there was a shootout in the childrens hospital lobby. Besides the crime, it's boring as hell. People just walk around smoking Captain Blacks, bumming cigarettes and talking about the weather and Sidney Crosby. Plus there are fat girls everywhere and I heard one of them fart at the mall today. I can't wait to get back to Korea next month because I've had it up to here with this place.
At least Vancouver has good things to do and good weather. Girls are a lot finer too.
Anyway, if Seoul is #58 then Halifax must be around #5000 because I'd rather be in Seoul than here any day of the week.

How many Canadian's and Aussies work here? I have met plenty of Canadian's, but only a handful of Aussies.
I found this: "By nationality, Chinese people accounted for 44 percent or 441,334, of the total foreigners living in Korea, followed by Americans (117,938, or 12 percent), Vietnamese (64,464, or 6 percent), Filipinos (50,264, or 5 percent) and Thais (42,792, or 4 percent), according to ministry figures." |

Auckland in the top ten? What the heck? That place is a dystopian hell hole with LA like traffic congestion. |

The criteria
Stability
Healthcare
Culture and environment
Education
Infrastructure
Well number 3 is my hometown and what a joke.
At least a years wait for elective surgery, expensive tolls on supposed free freeways, it's just about impossible to find a house for rent, virtually impossible to buy a house now, interest rates are going to go up, over burdened public transport, an ugly urban sprawl, millions of traffic lights that make commutes a pain in the neck, speed cameras EVERYWHERE meaning you have to watch your speed more closely than a pensioner watches his pennies on shopping day, expensive fines for just about everything road related from speeding to parking, a nasty rise in knife crime, gang violence, large restrictions on water use due to a long drought (even though I saw in the news today Melbourne is flooded), huge taxes on alcohol, smokes and fuel, high costs on eating out. Coffee is still good though!
It does have some good infrastructure, arts scene and cultural things but day to day life isn't what it used to be, sure beats Busan though! |

I just to have to say that Austria is simply world class and superb in every sense imaginable. A fantastic country and I pity everyone that will not visit it once in their lifetime. In my year of backpacking it was the biggest surprise I had. Vienna is fantastic. |
