Nobody needs it, it's a pseudo-medical procedure that does nothing for your health and is based on a long-since conclusively disproven theory that your colon somehow gets coated with a layer of hardened, dried feces that releases toxins and makes you sick. |

I value your opinion that it's not needed but that really didn't answer the question. What about mercury that may be in your intestines? I think getting this out would be a good thing. I want to hear from people that it worked for or didn't work for, and why. |

What about cadmium, hydrogen, iron, nickel, zinc and phosphorous? What evidence is there that mercury resides in you colon? |

It doesn't get mercury out of your intestines any more effectively than normal defecation does.
It's one of those things where only people who are gullible enough to believe that it actually does something, do it. So you're probably not going to find anyone who actually tried it and says it doesn't work. |

Thats not the intent of this thread? But, I'll play your silly game. What evidence exists to say there isn't? Of course, I would want to get rid of all the harmful heavy metals in my body if they are in my intestines.

Everything that gets removed from your colon during a colonic would have been removed naturally a day or two afterwards. All it does is remove less-digested feces that would come out anyway naturally. There are no medical benefits, nor any proof of such. |

Google, 2 seconds.
The Medical Community's Perspective
# While alternative medicine practitioners find colonics helpful for treating conditions ranging from constipation to sinus problems, most medical doctors believe that colonics provide no medical benefits. Doctors believe that the colon naturally eliminates waste materials on its own and feel that a colonic could be harmful, as it might throw off the body's electrolyte balance and cause salt depletion and dehydration. If you are considering having a colonic, you may want to consult your doctor and ask if the procedure will be safe, considering your health history.

Have you gone through this procedure? Your answer would have been perfect if I asked "Does the general populace on Google think this is a good or bad practice?" But thats not what I asked. I asked, if you have done this, do you think it helped you or not. Thanks for playing. |

Colonics are popular with the vegetarian - new age set because they don't eat properly and their bowels are inflamed. Or rather they don't eat what nature intended them to eat (animal fat).
I used to have such problems and considered doing it. But then I found that eating a high fat/low carb diet along with supplementing naturally fatty acids (like omega 3) allows the natural fat to pass through my colon and then I go to the bathroom once a day. I don't have to sit there and read the paper for fifteen minutes like before -- I'm done in 5 minutes. No IBS, no bloating. It's all diet -- and reducing cabs/grains to a minimum helps.
For people who believe the whole high fiber/whole grain/low fat diet hype, their bowels are always inflamed and thus they can't go to the bathroom, feel bloated, and feel this stupid procedure is necessary... when it really isn't.

I was reading and came across this in a health magazine.
Q: I've heard colonics can help you drop weight is it true?
A: No. While you may feel lighter after colonic irrigation (a process in which water, enzymes, or other "purifying" substances are filtered through a tube into your rectum and vacuumed out), it's the result of flushing out water and solid waste--not fat. There are also risks, including a loss of "good" digestive bacteria, electrolyte imbalances and even bowel punctures. And contrary to what you may have heard, waste doesn't build up inside the organ's wall like a clogged pipe. The keys to a healthy colon--and weight: eating a fiber-rich diet, drinking lots of water, and staying physically active.
According to the source not only are colonics completely unnecessary but are also potentially harmful. I have no experience in this myself except for the time where my cousin gave me a colon cleans pill (I took it cause she said it was good for the body...stupid I know) and never felt so bad as I did for the next week. |

Hi There,
You are entitled to have this done if you feel it is justified for your health.
But I do also agree with what others are saying. Fibre, diet etc.
I think it is a rarity that people have the discussed complications and there are some that do have blockages for one reason or another and are helped.
You will find that a (natural) fibre source, metamucil only (unflavoured) psylium (with or without slippery elm to help it) or an unprocessed all bran or no added sugar unprocessed raisin bran taken religiously each day will help and after a while you may not feel you need it. The benefit is there is little risk.
Up to you... |
