Nice. Look at the photo.
Glad the parents were outraged.

JEONGEUP, North Jeolla - Farmers who last week insisted that four passing elementary school students pickax five scarecrows as part of their protest of rice prices have apologized.
Outrage erupted after photographs showing three of the children hacking the dummies - meant to represent Jeongeup citys five agricultural chiefs - hit newspapers, and the farmers group came under fire as public outcry escalated..... |

The already grotesque demonstration ran out of control when the students walked by, and some farmers told them to pickax the scarecrows.
The children, all between 8 and 9 years old, desperately and repeatedly tried to refuse, but the farmers insisted they take up the sharp metal pickaxes and stab at the dummies. One student told the press she felt gross and strange after piercing the dummies several times with the pickax. |
The quoted part of the article above really stood out for me. These people should feel ashamed. |

Agreed. They are cowards for involving little kids like that. |

They're complaining about the trarrifs being lifted and the price going down. The same thing that they always protest about when rice is the topic.
It's actually cheaper to buy Korean rice overseas. |

This is exactly why Koreans pay four times as much for rice as people in most other countries do. |

I paid 15 pounds for a 9kg bag of rice in the UK recently. Is it more than that in Korea for a 9kg bag? |

... and why the government actually has huge stockpiles of rice, which costs a whopping 600 billion won to maintain annually. All to keep these rice farmers afloat and rice prices high.

The government purchases rice directly from farmers every year and keeps it for years in an effort to support their income. Farmers have diversified their income sources, but still make more than 50 percent of their earnings from rice production.
The government also provides subsidies to rice producers to protect them from cheaper imports...
...According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, the annual rice surplus amounts to 300,000 tons. The government currently has a stockpile of some 800,000 tons and spends some 600 billion won annually in keeping it. |

It doesn't have to be that expensive though does it. Just having had a look at Tesco's online shopping and a 4kg bag of easy cook rice is 3 which is less than 6000 won....and you can get it for cheaper than that. The rice I buy from Homeplus......which is crappy cheolwon rice......is around 4000 won a kilo. |

I was responding to Bigbuds who claimed that Korean rice is cheaper overseas - something which appears to be incorrect. Of course you can get basmati rice for a fraction of the cost of Korean rice but I actually prefer eating Korean rice as it tends to go with Korean food - which I often cook. |

So, they're keeping the prices artificially high? Plus the farmers want the prices even higher? |

Well, maybe not in the UK but in Australia it's chaeper than here.
Last time I was back home with my wife, we went to a Korean supermarket in Sydney to get some rice and other Korean ingredients so my wife could cook my family a traditional Korean meal.
I remember my wife asking, "Why is it cheaper to buy Korean rice in Australia than in Korea?". Then having to explain it all . |
