Just looking at the track, it seems as if they should have built a higher wall there! Wasn't it obvious?

They were showing video of this on CNN, including the impact and aftermath. The sound of helmet on steel was kind of sickening. And of course, it happened so fast. 90+ miles an hour, yes I'd expect padding everywhere. Reports say it's the fastest track ever. Typically after turn 10 or so, the track tends to flatten out and the sledders just coast through the final 5-6 turns. But on this course, the final turns just keep getting faster. This crash happened right at the end.

Does seem inherent to the track rather than the luger, doesn't it? If they don't fix it, they may have a similar tragedy on live TV.

You would think they would have done a better job of making that track safer. Uncovered steel beams next to the run? Too bad it took a death to address safety concerns. RIP.

...this borders on criminal negligence...truly unbelievable.
If that were someone from my family...I would want a serious investigation into the design and safety precautions that overlooked the potential for this very thing in initial planning....really...how was that even possible?
Of course the IOC will say it was a tragic accident...but just looking at that video...it seems like an obvious(criminally negligent) design flaw.
His family must be horrified having to see that on tv.
My sympathies go out to those who knew and loved him.

Nice job Canada. Maybe you should rethink your 3-year degrees. Meter-wide steel beams inches away from the track?!?! WTF?!?! Why not just line the outside of the track with daggers? My God that video is sickening.

Yeah,a very sad story and a disturbing video.

As soon as I saw this track,I was thinking, why the hell were those huge metal beams exposed right next to a monstrous turn? Rolling Eyes You'd think the track designers would have had the foresight to see that there was a tpotential tragedy waiting to happen.

There should have been a huge wall of padded material there near each turn in the track.

That's one problem with the Olympics now.Every sucessive country is trying to outdo the previous hosts or other venues. You think your 90mph luge track is fast.....well we're gonna build a 115mph one up in Vancouver! Shocked

You call that a ski hill??? We're gonna put in a few crazy 100mph turns which is gonna make your track look like a beginner's slope. etc etc

No need for Canada bashing here though.Who knows, mayeb the track was partially designed by an international team???

It was definitely negligence, but questioning a whold country's army of engineers because of an isolated incident is unecessary and petty.

The video makes it look like he went from 90 mph to 0 mph in 1 second.

Canada does not have 3 year degres; only the province of Ontario offers a 3 year degee, yet students in that province have to do grade 13 first. If you were informed enough you would also know that the UK has 3 year degrees, but my guessing is that you don't know that.

Who knows who designed this track, but I do know that Canada has very strict occupational health and safty regs and someone is going to pay for this. I wonder how it compares to other tracks?
