If you fancy doing something different tomorrow (Sunday) take yourself to Jeonju and check out The Vagina Monologues!

More info here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=245138486963&ref=ts

On first thoughts some might think it sounds rather non-Korean but sometimes this is a country full of surprises. I have heard of, but not experienced, giant statues of male sex organs here and a sex park of sorts in Jeju.

By the way, this whole event does also have a serious message behind it as can be seen in the quote below...

Over the last 14 years the purpose of The Vagina Monologues has evolved from a celebration of vaginas and femininity to a movement to stop violence against women

I had a decent discussion about the role of women in this country with some of my teachers. One of them actually ran her own hakwon, but she was so sick of the attitude of the fathers (and the mothers, in most cases, she says). "Ohhh, isn't that cute, she's running her own hakwon. Well, I hope she does well so she can land herself a good man!

She's leaving Korea soon. For a place where women are more respected. Iran.

That's not the vibe I get at all from Korea. I worked for a female hagwon owner during my first year here and she was very highly respected by everyone in her community. I have also known many Korean businesswoman who are very, very shrewd and are clearly not regarded as cutesey-wutesey by anyone. (I only wish they would stop snapping their gum at me so loudly. I can hear them a half a block away).

It is odd how this mythological figure of the denigrated female businesswoman continues to be regenerated over and over again, no matter how inaccurate it is in relation to the real world. Why is the image of female victimization so important to so many people's world order?

I saw it in the US many many years ago. The first time that I saw it advertised in Korea was back in 2001. This is something that they have done every year. I am certain that there are different producers and cast.

If someone hasn't seen it, it is worth the time for something different.

I'm just saying what she said, it could easily be inaccurate or misunderstood.

Or is it a movement to scold and reprove men?

Let so-called feminists have their Vagina Monologues, the same as the black community has Tyler Perry and Star Trek fans have their conventions.

So it's full of righteous indignation - as a guy I have tow wonder how does it effect you getting laid in the end? It doesn't. So long as there are genders, there will be inbalances and a new crop of women born with the god-given hormones to help them make dumb decisions, like having sex with us.

I would be curious to see this in Korea though. I think that might be hot. Or weird. Or both.
