Hi guys, I'm about to start a job with GEPIK. My recruiter, who I've had an awful time with, has just told me that I need a residency certificate in order not to pay taxes. They neither told me what it was or how to get it. I've due to leave in something like two weeks. Can someone please help?

If it's what I think it is....

It's called a "Certificate of the Facts of Alien Registration". I can't type Korean on this computer but.."Wei-gook-in-deung-lok-sa-shil-jeung-myeong" is the best I can do.

It lists all your addresses and dates of residency during your sojourn in Korea.

You can pick it up at your immigration office for 1,000 won.

I'm not sure what this has to do with wether you pay taxes or not....

Hope this helps.

I think what the OP is enquiring about is Proof of Residency in their original country (i.e. Canada, US, UK etc).

For UK: the post down the bottom http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=176042&highlight=residency says you need to request a letter from your tax office.

For Canada I think it's a PR card?

Generally, its your country's tax office that provides this documentation or letter, so maybe looking at their website or calling them could help?

Otherwise, as your profile doesn't have any information on your nationality, maybe if you post that other people can help? I'm pretty sure that this topic would have been covered previously.

I think this is the link to the form you need.

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8802.pdf

That would depend on where you are from.

If you are from the states then you need to file a form 8802 with the IRS.
I don't know for the UK

Canada does NOT have that perk. They pay Korean taxes and do NOT get the tax holiday for the 1st two years.

.

I-ve heard about 45 days. I just sent mine in last week and will have it mailed to my parents address because I-m not sure if the US will give me a cert of residency or not, considering the way I filed my taxes (as a non US resident) for the past 8 years.

You should call the IRS International phone number on the IRS contact page for more info. From what I got, you send or fax the 8802, pay the 35$ fee, and then the dang thing takes at least 30-45 days to be issued.

it took about 25 days for me to get my 6166 (residency doc) after mailing the check and form 8802 to the irs. if you have friends or family in the states, just request that it be sent to them, then have them mail it to you in korea once you have your address.
