Hi there-

I'm not allowed to be "self-employed" and hold the National Insurance plan with my weird visa status. However, my husband will be on an E-2 shortly and I've been told that I can have the national health care through him.

Will his national health care coverage kick in as soon as he begins working? Or is there a waiting period? I need to decide whether to cancel our current US overseas health coverage, and when to do this...

Thanks!

You are eligible for health insurance from the moment you step onto Korean soil with a valid work visa. However, it will take up to a month or so to get into the system. During that time, you'll have to fork out any money for medical bills, but you will get reimbursed once you are active in the system.

This also means that if you wait until your 6th month on your visa to sign up, you will have to backpay for the full time even if you never used the insurance.
