LEGALLY they are NOT obligated to pay for "less than a full calendar year".

Morally, they should pay.

Will they pay if you leave a bit early depends entirely on the principal and your relationship with him.

just tell them you agree that you will leave as soon as all the money has been deposited into your account. if they want you out three days early, they should have the money transferred to you four days early. otherwise, i wouldnt leave until i had completed my entire year.

Definitely. They need to demonstrate their desire. In this case, it should be: let money talk.

I have an excellent relationship with my principal and vice principal. I guess what I'm really asking is--- if they say I'll get my full severance package even though I left a little early, will I? Or is there a chance someone above them would still try to screw me?

If push comes to shove, I'll get a doctor's note (VERY easy to get) and sick day my last several days. I need to leave early for my own personal reasons anyway--- have some important job interviews on those days.

Tell you what, I have a rich uncle in nigeria and need some cash to pay for his debts to collect on his inheritance. Send me 2 million won and I'll cut you in on half.

My uncle's inheritance is twice as large, but I only want 2.5 million won.

The public schools comprise, essentially, the biggest and most dishonest of all Korean hogwan chains - a giant daycare system where the children learn nothing. There have been several threads from teachers duped into leaving a day or more early and losing out on severance and airfare. Being duped into leaving a few days early and losing out on 3 to 4 million won is a standard public school ploy to cheat their teachers.

Don't risk it. Get the deal in writing with the money paid to you prior to your early departure date. It they won't agree to this don't leave early.

AS OTHERS HAVE SAID INSIST IF THEY WANT YOU TO LEAVE EARLY THAT YOUR PAY AND SEVERANCE PAY ARRIVES TWO DAYS BEFORE YOUR THE DAY THEY WANT YOU TO LEAVE. I wrote in caps because I don't think you were listening to the others.

I guess that it would depend on the school and your relationship with them.
Approaching the the matter directly in a calm manner will help.

In my case, I taught at my school for three years and wasn't signing on again. I had a month of vacation and then my contract was over. Despite the fact that I had left the country a full month before my contract was done, I got all of my money.

DD--- I do agree with you and the others, just not sure how realistic this is. I'm at a public school, kind of mired in bureaucracy. I have less than two weeks to get them to pay me before I leave. In a sense, I have only 3 days because I'm on an almost mandatory vacation from school until right before I leave, and waiting 30 days for my severance package is just "the way it's done". (The vice principal very firmly made me take two extra weeks off because my wife is about to give birth, and he feels I should be spending more time with her. I only report into school for my last two days to tie up loose ends. And yes, I have an AWESOME vice principal.)

I think the best thing to do is follow arcade's advice, and try to follow DDs advice if I can. When I get back, I'll explain my concerns to the vice principal, try to get something in writing from him.

Complicating this situation is the fact that my vice principal speaks very little English, and my coteacher refuses to translate for me because she hates my guts. (Her official excuse is "that's not my job", but she's also ranted about how "All foreigners are unqualified" "Immigrants are ruining Korea", and that I'm "dishonoring" my wife by not assimilating to her culture enough. My vice principal and principal keep asking me why I won't renew. So far I've bit my tongue and not blamed her.)

I'll check with the vice principal on Monday-- maybe make the request with a small gift and a bow. (That sort of thing seems to make his day.)

And Dargon777--- you work at a public school? GEPIK, EPIK or SMOE?
