I am working through Korvia for a GEPIK position in late April, and they have a long list of required documents. Two reference letters, notarized apostilled diplomas, two copies of transcripts, ect. I was expecting some of these things, but the process of getting something apostilled is really tedious here. And they are not even sure if I will get the position. Is this the case for all GEPIK positions, or is this recruiting agency particularly picky about documentation?
Thanks,

It is the case for obtaining an E2 visa. You need it no matter where you apply in Korea. You should be able to get the Apostille from the Department of Justice in a couple of day's time.

Korvia wanted me to submit all my documents with my GEPIK application when I applied in Dec. But I am still waiting to see if I am hired. I got several copies of each document cause you need them no matter where you work. I am just not sure why Korvia wanted them so early. I really don't understand this hiring process.

If you are applying to GEPIK you are required to submit all the documents that GEPIK asks for. This is a GEPIK requirement, not a Korvia requirement. If you applied to work at GEPIK through any other recruiter you would have still have to submit the same docs.

Yes the process is tedious. Yes we all had to do it. I worked for GEPIK. I went through Korvia. Their after service was excellent.

I was thinking of going through touch4teaching for a public school job. Is GEPIK in charge of all of the public school jobs, and would it be wiser to just go through them? I'm new and trying to figure out the best way.

There are LOTS of public schools in Gyeonggi-do (a huge province in Korea). Many hire a public school foreign teacher through GEPIK, but others work with certain connected recruiters to get one, too. No matter how they get a foreign teacher, they all get a certain amount of money from the Korean national government (about 60 million won) to pay for all of the expenses of the foreign teacher at the school. Plus there's more money available from the federal government. It all depends on the political pull of your Principal.

GEPIK hires new teachers in August/September (Fall) and Feb/March (Spring) for the two public school semesters in Korea. But there are also many open positions throughout the school year. Find a decent recruiter and get a job that opens during the school year. A well-connected recruiter can help you with this. Don't work for private schools (hagwons). That's a way to get cheated.

Korvia sucks, and GEPIK sucks too. Treat all contracts from Korvia and Gepik with the same contempt that they honestly treat you. You are in their eyes another poor English monkey coming to korea to make a few bucks. The contract you receive may be detailed and seem fair on the face of it, but the harsh reality is it isnt worth a dam + they dont give a dam. As soon as u have an issue with your school they will automatically turn into the very thing you fear the most about being in another country and unfortunately korea.

If you dont need the money then go else where, looking back i can not justify all the trouble i went through to get out there, coupled with all the problems i had at my school and the eventual strong arm policy of Gepik and Korvia. Korvia is a recruitment company 1st and 2nd its nothing. They may seem like they are a nice bunch and really do care for you wellbeing. Bull Sh*t, money, money money its a rich mans world. They are just as deceitful as any other good recruitment agency but unfortunately they are in korea and employ foreigners who have as much rights as a china man there. Unless you are korean that is. Na it anit worth it. Try another place like Japan at least all the hard work would be worth it.

Everyone's situation is different.

I work for GEPIK and love it! I was also recruited through Korvia and they were really nice and helpful through the entire process.

This isnt to say that a recruiter wont put making money over placing a candidate (it is a business), every situation is different...and I'm sure there are people out there unhappy with their experiences with Korvia (though most on here seem to be positive).

Just like a recruiter will tell a candidate what they require, maybe you could try the same thing?

You will definitly have to submit the documents to get your visa...but if you dont want to find yourself empty handed, maybe you could let Korvia know that you wont send ANYTHING until you are guaranteed a position (which still means little here...i.e. SMOE hires for Fall 2009)

It might work...it might not. Keep in mind a lot of people are applying left and right so any inconvenience could be a reason to find someone "unplaceable".

good luck!
