I went to Standard Chartered bank (제일은행) today so I can send money back home online. I already have internet banking, but it took a 1 hour trip yesterday, and 3 hours today to be able to set up my account for this. I was given all kinds of excuses as to why I can't send the money home online, and was told I needed my passport, ARC, payslips from work, my employment contract, my American drivers license, and another form of photo ID (apparently a passport, Korean license, and American credit card aren't enough).
When I called KEB I was told that I could set up the account at any branch, and just have to bring my ARC and passport. For anyone that needs to send money home, I'd advise going to KEB. The staff is friendly and it helps to have an English speaking customer service center that can answer all questions. |

Set up at KB*.... Took me a half hour worth of paperwork (ARC and Passport) and it's set up so that I can use any KB ATM to send cash to my account back home (5k per transaction, plus whatever your bank back home charges) |

The only problem I had was that my existing account was tied to my passport, but not me ARC (Or vice-versa, not really sure) so I had to open a new account with them that had both... Just an added step of transfering cash from one account to the other and then pressing the button to send it home. Takes me all of 3 minutes start to finish, lol |

I use NH (NongHyup), along with many other EPIK teachers. Everyone I know has had to go through hoops to do anything with them. Setting up online banking was a pain, setting up overseas transfers that same. Korean banking is awful and overly paranoid. |

Yes, KEB is awesome. I just found out you can get them to wire money from your KEB account to your home account every month. For me, it'll save me from asking my schools if I can leave to do a bank transactions.
KEB all the way. Advice to people teaching English in Korea--get a KEB remittance account and a Visa debit card. This will make it easy to save money (if you have a NH account) and purchase things online (in Korea). Friends told me you can even use your card in the U.S. and Canada. |

NH haven't been so bad for me. There internet banking system is a joke, though. I haven't tried to set up overseas remittance online, because I gave up on there internet banking system. I might try again if it will save me cash. It's 40,000 to remit cash with a teller. I always go for the male senior tellers who have their own little mini office. I've had two in two years and they have both been super friendly and helpful.
I got a cheque card the other day. It took 15 mins and they hopped straight to-it. No umming and ahhing, like you get with some other services in Korea.
Overall, my experience with NH has been just fine. Except for their dodgy internet banking system. |

Does anyone know if KEB provides internet banking to Mac users?
I looked on their website, can't find much. Mac support is the one thing keeping me at Shinhan. |

The poster Egrog is correct.
Go to Kookmin Bank (KB)
Fill out the form for overseas remittance from an ATM. It doesn't take long. After this you won't have to deal with any more lines, internet issues or forms again. You can just go to an ATM, like you do for any other transaction. Done in a few minutes. For those who don't know Korean it's all in English.
SIMPLE!!! |
