| When I leave Korea for good I will have a certain amount of cash(prefer not to disclose) and I am trying to figure how much I should wire before I leave and how much is safe to exchange at the airport and take with me on the plane? thanks |

| You can take up to 10,000 US dollars out in cash. The rest has to be wired. You can wire up to 50,000 a year a believe as long as you have your earning statement from you employer. Anybody else? This might be dated. |

I appreciate the information,but I think you might have misunderstood me. I was wondering what you and anyone else might think a safe amount might be to take with me on the flight home. Example, after exchanging for US currency I might have 5000 USD or more or less. What would you feel the amount that should be taken? I doubt anyone would take 10,000,so let's start from 9,000USD and go down.

Hi,
Can I suggest asking for a cheque in your own currency from the exchange bank?
It can be banked directly and deposited where you like. You can make it out to yourself and they give you a photocopy and statement which is enough proof if something gets lost.
Many banks will do exchange checks now and the fee is minimal. Often linked to a bank in your home country. A bank cheque should have less fees associated then a travellers check in my experience but for the extra fee you should you need to use checks for a trip. Travellers cheques are accepted at hotels and things as well as banks.
Make sure you keep enough in cash to use in the meantime though. |

I am 6'4" and 300# and change. I believe $10,000 in cash is a reasonable amount to carry on my person. I carry it in my passport pouch which is held around my neck against my bare belly. My shirt is tucked in so I can feel it there at all times.
For me, this is safe.
If that doesn't help you, I'm not sure of your question. |

I appreciate your feedback,but I may be staying at the airport for the night and not getting on the plane until morning. Iam 6'0 and about 225,but does not mean much if someone takes your money without knowing. I planned on doing my currency exchange before arriving at the airport so I will not be seen changing my currency ,which would make me an easy mark for a thief. |

Stop colon: Questioning mark?ing everyone. Have you ever traveled abroad? Tie the cash around your neck, and your wrist, and sleep on the floor outside the airport police post if you're paranoid. It's an airport. There are cameras everywhere.

I personally wouldn't walk around with an excess of $500. I still have my US debit card and am much happier just running purchases on that anyway. Cash on a plane? Hell, they won't even let you buy booze with cash anymore because it's an inconvenience.
Are you worried about the exchange rate? Do you think it would be better at the airport than the bank? |
