Hey,

Um..like the title says, I guess..

If you ended your contract on a friday and flew out on a saturday, when did you receive your money? Or, how long before your departure date before you received all money owed?

Just curious how it works with other/most schools.

cheers!

Well, if you trust your school enough to fly out the next day then... Smile

I have alway gotten my severance on the last day of my contract, but I have always renewed with the same school. If I wasn't renewing, I would extend my stay for a week to make sure I get my severance before taking off.

If your school's good, it shouldn't take more than a week.

I've been here for four years, but I've only completed two full contracts. The first one, I was paid on my last teaching day in full. The second one, I had all sorts of problems with. I got my last month's pay, but the boss took quite a while to pay me my severance. At first, he said he didn't have the money, but he would get it really soon. Then he had "banking problems." And, finally, he faked a medical condition and checked into a hospital to delay paying my severence.

I've been around the block a few times, and never left the airport without my severance already in the bank. Most recently, it was paid two days before my last day, as I was in your situation, OP.

You hear some awesome horror stories about severance, but I've never experienced it myself.

I was told I wouldn't get severance until the end of the month (my contract ended on September 15th last year). Since I had another job lined up, I didn't complain because I was going to stay in the country. However, they paid on my last day. They made such a big thing about kicking me out on my last day, which is in their right to do so, but they didn't have a replacement teacher at the time. I offered to continue working until I could move into my new place. They refused.

You could try this with your school, if you offer to work a little beyond your contract period then you can make sure they give you your severance and last pay.

Also, if your school is paying for your flight home, then somehow you needed to have that arranged well before your last day. So, simply ask them, "Ok, you will pay me for my flight on this date, when will you pay me for my severance and final pay?". The obvious answer is, "Oh, we will pay your severance when we deposit your final pay". Just make sure you get that from them.
