I have always thought, if you're going to speak, it should be for the listener's benefit. I guess many people here are used to lecturing classes of English language learners, and they don't get much of a response. They become accustomed to 'filling up the silence.' I find it relaxing to be able to listen for a change. I also find people are generally interested in my stories, but I do meet some who aren't, so I am aware (sometimes at least) when I'm not interesting.
I met two older guys here who were kind of 'been everywhere' people, they had lots of stories about random stuff that happened in their lives. I thought they were both cool, but many of the other foreigners who knew them didn't really like them. One of them didn't seem to realize that though, he just kept talking. The other guy seemed to know exactly how he was being received, and spoke just enough. |

Sounds a lot like my mum, who has the miraculous ability to speak at me for just over an hour with me doing nothing so much as vague nods, whilst looking in other directions. (England).
My American friend's dad has an even more impressive ability to hold a 3 hour conversation about the paint on doors =\ |

Its cool to raise awareness of your band on the boards, but this topic has nothing to do with your videos. Neither does funniest man ever?, or Share 3 true things about yourself. |

| It's a pity the videos look like so much work have gone into it, yet nobody thought to at least auto-tune the voices, or harmonize, or quantize, or anything to make it musically acceptable... =\ |

jeez guys at least I posted in the off topic forum. And actually put in some thought as to which ones I posted in. These vids are meant to be nothing but fun. Clearly you need some of that albeit in whatever way shape or form you can handle. Get off these boards and have some fun!!
Example: three things about yourself: i posted 3 things
Example: people that can not converse properly: I was clearly making a comment on the silly things we do while here.
Get out and have some fun! |

I am not saying all Americans are like this at all.
Then why even mention he is American? You've biased the thread from the start. I haven't read this thread yet, but I can imagine lots "Americans are a bunch of arrogant blah blah blah" floating around. If I'm wrong, I will be surprised. |

YES YES YES!!!!
I have a co-worker I can't STAND. Talk about loving the sound of his own voice. Expert on every subject, and will answer questions not even directed at him before the person being asked even has time to register the question. SUCH a rude guy, but he has NO IDEA WHATSOEVER. I am just dying to tell him to F-off, but for the sake of work harmony I have just ignored him 90%of the time for the painfully long time that we have been working together.
Things I hate:
* The fact that you think you are a world expert on teaching, even though the Korean staff and students complain about you behind your back.
* The fact that you think you are an authority on Korean culture, even though you can't speak but 10 words of Korean.
* The fact that you have old-man syndrome. You are in your 30s but you act like my grandpa.
* The fact that instead of politely refusing food items and moving on, you feel the need to delve into a lecture about why said food is so bad for you and make everyone else eating it feel like they ought not to be.
* The fact that you are sooooo condescending that you think your fellow foreign co-workers need to be told basic things like how to greet the school owner (in English)!! - oh really, we should smile and say "Hello"? FCK me, I had no idea.
*And as a side note, you have no morals whatsoever. HONEST people who find things make an attempt to find their owner before claiming them. They also do not loot others' possessions while their backs are turned....."Oh really? That was yours?" YES. That's why it was MY office, in MY drawer.
*And finally, basic manners, dude. When you come in, say "Hello" - it won't kill you. When other people say Hello, say it back - that won't kill you either. Say goodbye when you leave instead of just disappearing. And finally, when you take an EXTENDED trip overseas, bring a little something - a bag of candy, any small thing, to say thank you to the people who have been covering your ass for a month. If that's too much trouble, say "Thanks" at least, for fricks sake.
PS: When you are lying to your colleagues, it's best not to brag about said lies on online forums. We know everything.
Love, Gossipgirl, xoxo.
PPS: I won't mind saying all this to your face someday, on the happy day when you stop talking about leaving and actually LEAVE. |
Why don't you just say all (or at least some of) that stuff now? |

Risk to reward ratio, basically. High chance of making the work environment uncomfortable vs low chance of him taking on board anything I tell him. I'm trying to keep it professional at the moment, but when he leaves (his contract is up this summer), I'll tell him everything - nothing to lose at that point. |

I was talking to a fellow American teacher the other day. It was virtually a one-way conversation. He wanted to just talk and talk.
Anyway, we kind of parted company and then met again near the elevator. Once more he was going on and on and on.
So, I started to drop some polite hints that it was time to end the conversation. When somebody says, 'Well, I think I'd better go now' etc. it means the conversation is going to end soon.
I eventually managed to get away and that was it.
I am not saying all Americans are like this at all.
In fact, I've met a few here who don't talk forever.
I think it was because this guy was older and also liked to talk. The thing is he didn't seem to realize he was becoming tiresome.
If the conversation didn't end, it felt like drastic measures would be required i.e. please shut up now and let me leave.
Have you met people who seem to lack self-awareness in communication?
Tell us about them. |
Maybe he was inspired by having read an endless number of posts by someone that rambled on and on about how bad their school was in Korea, and all the problems with their coworkers and who finally left Korea, went back to England, then to Saudi Arabia, and still continues to ramble on about worthless garbage on the Korean site. |
+ 1
hehe fromtheuk mentioned how he was being being assertive when he did a runner from his job in Korea, then skites about doimg a runner on this forum. Fromtheuk isn't it about time you realise that maybe the reason you are having so may problems in your life is because it's your fault. Honestly maybe get some counselling... but definitley get a life |

I accept it is possible for me to be to blame for some of the problems I've encountered in life. On the other hand, it's also possible I am very perceptive and mostly right when I claim other people are to blame and I am often relatively blameless.
Take my current job. I've done nothing on full pay for over 3 months. I will go into work tomorrow to collect my schedule. Class begins next week.
Anyway, the point is I've had no problems in this job at all.
This confirms my view I am not responsible for some of the problems in previous jobs. I was surrounded by unkind, retarded children that pretend to be adults. Sadly, they were unable to analyze themselves as effectively as moi. |

You aren't an American. You can't have a fellow American teacher. I think you mean a fellow teacher that is an American. |
No. No. He was trying to say.. " fallow Armenian preacher ..." |

I meant to say 'fellow native teacher' but I said 'fellow American teacher' assuming people would understand what I meant. I also couldn't be bothered to change it. |
