Hey folks:
I just moved to Seoul this week and need some advice what high speed net connection I should use. I've had a dial up through shinbiro and they have a high speed but want to know what folks use.

Does the cable companies here offer high speed?

thanks

My thrunet was on the same cable as my TV last year. I had Hananro recently, and it was on it's own separate cable.

I have cybervillage now, but only because it's free for 2 years in this new place.

I used Shinbiro broadband my first year and I wasn't too happy with it. I remember wanting to disconnect it every couple of days, but couldn't because I had a contract. My second year I signed up with Mega Pass. I thought it was great. Now I'm back in the USA and use Roadrunner. Here's my rating:

1. Roadrunner
2. Mega Pass
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?
6. ?
7. ?
8. ?
9. ?
10. Shinbiro

I got da mega mega pass, yo!

It works really well. I just have the standard cable-modem setup. You can get super high-speed as well for a few thousand won extra, but this one works just fine for me.

Just got megapass VDSL.

It isn't as fast as I had hoped...but I do get 1MB/s up and down. I get more if I actually use more 10/100 NIC instead of my 10Mbit NIC.

I'd suggest Megapass. Cable is horrible on loading webpages in my experience.

Previously I used Korea Telecom but had trouble because the KT contract finished after my employment contract. They insisted on me paying a penalty for getting out of my internet contract early.

Does anyone know where / if I can get an internet connection in my apartment without tying myself to a one year contract ?

You can use KT on a month by month basis, you just pay more for it. Your penalty was just the discount you were given that had to be paid back.

Basically if you sign a three year contract, you save 6,000 Won a month. With a one year contract you save 3,000. No contract just means you don't get the discount.

Care to say where KT is slow as sh*t?

I've used Thrunet, kcnet5 and megapass.

Thrunet was slow as anything surfing or uploading outside of Korea. Inside Korea it wasnt bad.

kcnet5 was alright, but i got tired of webpages taking forever to load outside of Korea.

Megapass seems the best for overall stuff. With VDSL I can upload really really fast now.

I wish I had Ntopia like Gord...but my building is a little too old for that. With Ntopia you get all the speed you will ever need.

If you are downloading warez, regular cable seems way faster than adsl. For other stuff, adsl has way better pings and so IMO is better overall.

I'm a recent Megapass convert - and with the high speed VDSL. No complaints at the moment.

As for a poster ranking Roadrunner above megapass - I find them pretty even.

Worst "highspeed internet" service is China Telecom in Taiwan. Not as fast as they boast and they control the grids EVERYBODY uses (regardless of the provider).

Megapass gets Joe's seal of approval.
