I read in another thread that Daejeon nightlife is supposed to be pretty good. I live in Songtan and am getting bored of the nightlife there and was considering taking an overnight trip there to unwind.
I'm not into juicy bars here and would rather be around a bunch of intelligent conversationalists instead of these little scammers just wanting to talk so they can make money. Can someone fill me in on the nightlife there? What are some of the better places to go? I'm interested in a place that has good music, fresh beer, fun people, relatively priced drinks, possibly some pool, maybe a little Karaoke or dancing. |

I've never thought to pile those things in alongside intelligent conversation... Would be a dream come true if I ever found it, mind. Except the karaoke. I hate when people write your name to go up and sing even though you don't want to, so you end up refusing, and then using force to stop people persuading you, getting kicked out and humiliated, and then arrested for manslaughter, only to contract either HIV or pneumonia in jail and DIE. |

Better stay in Songtan, OP. Korea scary!
According to Wikipedia, there are some bar areas where billiards are so popular that it is not uncommon to see folks walking the streets with sticks and darts in hand. Generally, however, the foreigners avoid these places because stick and dart wielding Koreans are easily mistaken for OMGNINJAS. But you should be all right.
In other words, you may be overlooking some of the less juicy parts of town with an interesting crowd of tavern hoppers. |

Hey OP,
I left Daejeon over a year ago, and still try to make visits. As for nightlife and what you described, there are a few options.
There's Santa Claus where you can play pool, fooseball, choose what music you want to play next (the computer is in the open for everyone - just have respect for those who put their choices up first  ) It's a chill vibe, not dancey. You can also get food there if you desire. There are usually 2-for-1 drink specials on until a certain time (not sure anymore) and the owner, Mr. Ho, is really sweet.
In the Daeheung Dong area:
Brickhouse has been a staple for years. It is foreign-owned (I believe... it's crossed many hands, so I'm not sure anymore) with a pool table, fooseball table, darts. There is often live music and there are trivia nights. I'm not sure when either is, but you can check the FB page. You can get some foreign pubfood there as well.
J-Rock is mostly for dancing (IMO) There is a pool table, decent sized dance floor, lots of places to sit and there are usually drink specials. There USED to be a weekly poker tourny, but I am really unsure if they are doing this anymore. It has changed hands since I have been there last.
Woodstock has started to gain popularity. It's kind of a small, hole in the wall with lots of vinyl records staring you in the face. Fair prices on drinks. Some nights are 2-for-one. As with Brickhouse, check the FB page. You can make requests on what music to play. The vibe is really chill.
Watermelon Sugar (or Sugar Watermelon... I forget which...) is a dance club right above Woodstock. There is a mix of both foreigners and Koreans. if I remember correctly, there are decent priced drinks.
If you go to the Timeworld area, there are some more choices:
Sponge opened up a few months ago (maybe about a year.... I'm not sure) There is a pool table, dart boards, 3000won draught, and the music is a mix. There is enough space that people will start dancing.
Lucky Stirke usually has a few people in it. It's small, but the mojitos are great ^^ The staff is friendly.
Bon Bon is another place. I haven't been there in a LONG time. During dinner hours, you can get great pasta and other dishes. They will have drink specials on as well. Again, I haven't been there in a while, but I remember it being quite chill, but it gets more hectic as the night goes on.
Like another poster said, the bars are there, but the people don't seem to be there. It really depends on the night where most people end up at. I also think that there have been other posts on this topic as well, but the search function and I seem to be at odds.
If anyone wants to add to this, or correct me, then by all means, do it up! Like I said earlier, it's been a while and I'm going by memory. I am sure there must be newer places that have opened. Good luck, OP!! |

The intelligent conversation just so happens to take place after several alcoholic beverages. Haven't you ever noticed your ability to philosophize, sing and dance increases proportionately with the consumption of alcoholic beverages? |

An example - a few months back it was some big event such as st paddies day or whatever and a lot of the Daejeon bars in Time world were giving away free drinks, 2 for one, cool costume parties etc so me and my friend were all geared up and ready to go. We went to Spionge, Lucky strike, all of them, literally all of them and the busiest one had about 5 guys in it and NO GIRLS. The barstaff gave us 5 budweisers each for free, they were that desperate to attract new patrons....
It seems you have to either a. have a large social group already (I don't, my mates are in Seoul and I teach public school in a rural area) or b. literally cruise every bar until you find the ONE bar that all the foriegners have decided to go to this week and all the rest will be dead.
Trust me Daejeon's social scene for foriegners is all make up and short skirt but no put-out.... Don't get your hopes up and you wont get dissappointed....
Parts of Deajeon do LOOK like sincheon / hongdae (jung-ang dond springs to mind) but they just don;t have the people.

Great reply and advice I'm sure. I did forget to mention anothert thing, so thins kind of goes for Seoul as well. I'm looking for a place with a middle or mixed aged crowd. I'm 50 but I consider that middle aged. I'm not quite geriatric, yet. |
