I am looking to add more RAM to my compaq laptop. Just wondering if anyone knows what sort of price I should be looking at here in Korea-and how much it should cost to install (looking at heading to Yongsan to get it done). Thanks guys

Install SHOULD be free where you buy your RAM. At most, 5k won for the install (it only takes 2 minutes).

Cost, I can't help you. Laptop ram is proprietary and they can pretty much charge what the market will bear.

It isn't supposed to be difficult to install it yourself. There are a million videos on youtube about how to do it. I'm about to upgrade the RAM on my gfs Toshiba(I've never done it before.) The hardest part is working out what kind of RAM you need. A Gig of RAM costs around 50K. I'm sure you can get it for cheaper than that if you shop around.

What do you mean by that? Shocked

You can buy quality RAM from Samsung or Hynix and put it in any laptop no problem.

OP, never ever pay someone to install RAM; it's so easy! Just make sure your laptop is unplugged and you removed the battery. Check which panel you need to unscrew for you model and watch a youtube video to see how it's done. It's really simple.

I mean it is proprietary. Toshiba RAM won't fit into a Lenovo laptop won't fit into a SENS laptop, won't fit into a ... laptop.

Each laptop has it's own flavor (physical size, shape, pins, etc) of RAM so you have to get the one that goes into your specific machine (unlike desktop RAM that is pretty generic).

ttompatz, what you are saying is partially true in the sense that it used to be like that a long time ago, like many years ago, but it's 2010 now! Time to update your information. Smile

Just in case you don't believe me:
History
Early models of laptop PCs were often limited to proprietary RAM modules, designed and/or made by the laptop manufacturer. They were more expensive and came in smaller capacities than desktop RAM modules. With the development of the compact SO-DIMM standard, laptop manufacturers adopted it over the older proprietary forms, and the capacity evolved to become competitive with desktop PC RAM. SO-DIMM modules have also been adopted for use in many printers, enterprise networking technology and small-form-factor PCs.

cmr is right.

Every laptop nowadays will accept 200-pin DDR2 SO-DIMM memory modules......... (except the very latest 204-pin DDR3 equipped laptops).

There are still some very old laptops around using the old DDR standard.

DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are not interchangeable.

As for the speed........your laptop will take so-dimm modules of any speed. But it will only run those modules at the speed of which the laptop mainboard is designed for. E.g........DDR2 PC6400 (800mhz) memory can work in a laptop designed for DDR2 PC5300 (667mhz), but it will only run at 667mhz.
