So I was thinking. With Korea gettin all modernized and what not........
Do you think dogs will be off the menu in the not so distant future here?
If this turns into a pissing match about the treatment of dogs or whatever, that wasn't my intention... |

Is whale off the menu in Japan? People get annoyed with that yet nothing changes. |

South Korea also sells whale meat which is "accidentally" caught in fishing nets. A single whale in Korea can bring in as much as 37,000 USD. Around 200 whales (Piked) are caught "accidentally" off Korean coasts each year. I believe you can buy some legally in Ulsan, after whale/dolphin watching.
The dog restaurants have been around since antiquity, so I can't see them disappearing anytime soon. In both cases, (Whales in Japan, and Dog's in Korea) it has to be a cultural change from within. But, with dogs being good for your Gi, and man's stamina, (so I've heard) I'm thinking they'll be around long after we are gone.
I remember listening to a travel podcast from the BBC a while ago which featured a woman who had lived in Korea for 6 months. She had written a book about her experiences. When the inevitable question popped up about dog cuisine, she was adamant the restaurants were few and far between, and NONE were located in major cities. Made me laugh. I guess that 보신탕 restaurant near my previous apartment in Nowon was just a mirage. |
