So I watched womens figure skating. Kim Yuna won a derserved gold medal. But the American girl who came in fourth got robbed. She should have at least had the bronze. She didnt stumble like the Canadian who finished third. Granted im no expert, but i dont see how the Canadian gal scored higher on todays performance. She was a crowd favorite and her mom just died so maybe thats it. |

Two events a short program and a long program are used to determine the winner. The American girl was very happy as she got 3 place in the long program to move her from 6th up to 4th. If she had skated better in the short program a few days ago she would have finished 3rd in total of the two events and got a bronze medal.
I guess you should learn more about how the scores are determined before you suggest things are rigged.
Kim Yu na can skate in my house anytime she likes. I will even build a rink for her. |

I realize figure skating has two stages. Today was the long program. The Canadian gal scored 131.28 today and the American gal 126. The Canadian girl missed two jumps. Her spins were flat. I dont see how she could have scored higher in todays performance. Just doesnt seem possible after watching both. But since you are such an expert, why dont you explain how a skater can badly miss two jumps and still get the third highest score of the day. As I watching, it took five minutes longer than usual for the American skaters score to come out. I knew then that she was hosed. |

Why grumble about third place? No one will remember who won bronze in the Ladies figure skating, six months from now. "If your not first, your last". |

I agree the American gave an exceptional performance, and I was disappointed in the Canadian because in the short routine she did the best I've ever seen her do, coming extremely close to beating Asada Mao.
Anyway, I should have thought the American skater's score would have been more too, but then I'm no judge. |

I hate sports with judges. I'm no conspiracy theorist but you'd be silly to think there isn't favoritism, and sympathy points handed out in these sports. |

I saw part of the American girl's performance today. It looked like she did well. The difference in points could do with the degree of difficulty of each skaters' routine. It could be that the canadian was attempting a more difficult routine so even if she doesn't execute it perfectly she will still score higher than someone who does a flawless performance of an easier routine.
I will grant that her being canadian and that her mom died probably helped somewhat, but there was too big of point difference between her and the american. No one gets that much sympathy. |

I was surprised too that the 4th place American girl only scored 126 on last nights performance. She needed 138 to beat Jeanne Rochette, the Canadian in third place, who had a 7 point lead from Tuesday's performance as well as Thursday's 131 score. At the time I thought she would beat Rochette's 131 score but I wasn't sure she would get quite to 138 to take over 3rd place. I was thinking she would be around 136 - 137. I'm not sure therefore that if it was a steal or not, it would have been really, really close in the scoring as I think the American girl should have scored somewhere in the 130's. Would it have been enough to beat Rochette? I don't know. |

I agree. The difference was too big to wonder if something fishy was going on. The 4th place American did an outstanding job.
Then again, I know nothing of routines and what is hard and what is easy. They make everything look easy imo. |
