I have a multiple entry visa until the end of March. If I leave the country before, I can still return with it. However, what if I want a tourist visa instead so I can stay longer in Korea?

When do I cancel my current visa and when do I seek a tourist visa? Before I leave Korea or when I return?

Also, this may sound dumb, but I don't know cause I haven't traveled much. Is it even possible to go to another foreign country and keep the multiple-entry visa, or do they automatically cancel it?

I want to make sure this multiple-entry visa is not just for our home country.

IF you are leaving Korea and want to ensure that your multi-entry gets canceled - LEAVE YOUR ARC with the immigration officer on the way out.

Your visa and status of sojourn are canceled. Your re-entry automatically becomes a tourist stamp when you return.

If you are in Korea, your contract has ended and you want to remain for the purpose of tourism, go you the local immigration office and change your status from E2 to tourist. they will require your exit ticket to do this.

If I take a ferry instead of a boat, can I leave my ARC card there instead or does it have to be at an airport? I don't want something stupid like this to come up if I decide to go by ferry.

Also, ttompatz brought up something I forgot. If I want to extend my visa and change it to a tourist visa, can I show something that indicates I will leave by ferry to the immigration office instead of a flight?

You need an exit ticket. Your stay will be extended until the date/time on the ticket. This extension CANNOT be extended again.

Ok, let me clarify my questions.

Can this exit ticket be a ferry exit ticket or does it have to be a ticket from an airline company?

Can I leave my ARC card at ferry immigration or does it have to be airline immigration at the airport?

Also, about extending, the plan would be to extend one month, leave the country, and then re-enter on a tourist visa. That would give me I think 1 month on the extension and 3 months on the tourist visa (4 months total).

ANY exit ticket - boat, plane, e-ticket...just show that you are leaving the country. It can be anywhere UP TO 30 days from the end date of your ARC.

You can leave your ARC at ANY passport control exit point.

Are you re-entering on a tourist visa or just a visa waiver stamp? Unless you are Canadian you get 90 days on the stamp and a visa isn't necessary. Yes, 4 months total.

Not sure what "visa waiver" is, but one option I am thinking of is re-entering at some point. This would give me more than enough time to get a new CRC ready so I could get another job.

I am not sure if I will get a release letter or not, so what I could do is go to Japan for 3 months and come back to Korea. This would give me a maximum of 7 months. I only need 5.

A visa is a piece of paper stuck into your passport giving you permission to enter a country for a specific purpose (like your E2 visa).

A visa waiver stamp is the "stamp on arrival" that most people get instead of a real visa.

There are some restrictions to using the visa waiver stamp (like having an exit ticket before they let you board the plane).
