If you want to make money in China you can teaching English. Wages are going up, cost of living is still low if you dont drink in western bars. China is fun but I think many whingers on here wont like it. seoul is pretty westernised but to some people on ESL cafe its a mixture of Mogadishu and Soweto. Go with an open mind and work hard at your contacts and studying Chinese and you will be ok. China has a LOT of problems and a LOT of stuff that can annoy you on a day to day basis but the people are friendly and they are generally interested in and like foreigners.
As I said before you need to be there on the ground with a pile of resumes running around schools and making contacts to land the good jobs. |
I don't have a PM from you in my inbox. Were you sending it to me or someone else? |

pugwall sent the pm to 'El Macho'.
The advantage of SH over GZ, SZ, HK, is that Shanghainese is probably closer to Mandarin than Cantonese. Any linguistics expert(s) around, that can either confirm or negate this? |

For all those who whine that Korea is third world or backwards, I think they would find China shocking. So yes, you are right, the complainers would be in shock.
There are a few things I like about China, but IMO Korea is better. I wouldn't say I am counting down the days until I leave China and return to Korea, but I really had no clue what the reality of living in China was like compared to Korea.
The pollution is brutal. When you can land in Seoul and say "Damn this air is clean," you know something isn't right.
The people are pretty cool overall, but I get more stares here than I do in Korea.
As for money, as I said in an early post, it is hard to make the same kind of money you would in Korea. The price of goods in China has gone up a lot. I came here in 2005 and 2006 and it seems after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, pricing on some items doubled. Thus your money won't go as far as you think it will.
Anyways, China isn't for everyone. I concur on staying out of the dirty towns. I thought my town wouldn't be so bad, but how can it not be when I have a coal fired power plant about 1.5km from my house? |
