Just moved to Gohyeon on Geoje island and I'd like to get the scoop on what to do.

I'm really interested in outdoor activities and would appreciate any information related to hiking, kayaking, fishing and mountain biking. Where to go, buy/rent equipment, etc? Also interested in getting scuba certified. Anyone know of an English speaking dive shop here?

Other than that, where are the good bars, restaurants, gyms, massage spas (not *beep*-houses), or any other place I should know about?

Thanks!

Go to the Admiral Hotel shopping center in Okpo, about 15 minutes east of Gohyeon, on the east coast of the island. On the 2nd floor of that small shopping complex is the Foreigners' Club with over a 1000 members from many countries, mostly European engineer types working at the shipyards and their families. They will tell you about hikes, bbqs and other get togethers. Geoje Island is one place in Korea where it is easy to do things with other foreigners. I lived there for over three years and when I met a waygook teacher who said he didn't do anything with other foreigners I thought why the heck would a loner come to Geoje? That's like someone who hates the water moving to Hawaii. What a waste!

Maybe he wasn't loner, he just hung out with Koreans in a very exclusive way that wouldn't have included us.

Geojes a pretty sweet place, But get transport as soon as you can, you can buy both second hand motorbikes and cars easily.

Theres heaps of hiking and watersports to do. The engineers dont have the best of reputations a collegue of mine was told all they do is order out for pizza and prostitutes, but the one's i've met are pretty sound.

Get the local tourist map and just cruz around everything, when you get your E2 card that says you're working on Geoje you even get locals rates for everything.

The place has really good restaurants so eating out is nice, although I live in the sticks so cook at home most of the time.

Jazz Bar in Goyeon is good, easy to meet foreigener's and locals alike. They put on a show with bottle tossing i.e the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail
Friday, Saturday and holiday Sunday nights. It's actually good, the owner represented Korea in the Asian championships a few years ago, he said he bombed out in the competition but he's good. flames happening etc, sometimes an electric violin and a band the first Fri, sat night of the month, so this Fri, Sat.

There seems to be a lot of stay at home western teacher couples here but there's enough social people to make it worthwhile. Plus you can save a truckload.

Also check out ther Geoje teachers site on facebook, there's about 130 member's last time I checked
