We've got a dinner tonight to welcome the new principal of our school. I've only got 3 1/2 weeks left on my contract and so I'm not too terribly worried about getting brownie points.

I'm curious, does anyone have any killer good excuses for blowing off work dinners?

Did you just hear about it today? Simple: prior plans. you have a girlfriend.

Haha, no I heard about it on Friday. I just really don't want to go now. Should have told them an excuse before, but it sounded okay back then.

Honestly, does anyone really care if you show up anyways? The foreigners always just sit in the corner while they make grand speeches in Korean.

Is your school's staff bad?

Whenever my school schedules a free dinner/lunch/food-related event, I'm for it. We're not the richest school, but our principal manages to choose pretty good places. I wouldn't think of not going to one of these functions if I was actually free. I've always had a good time.

I don't know anything about your situation or school so good luck getting out of the dinner.

Try this: Korean food is too greasy for me.

that's one of the dinners I'd go to, though I understand you only have 3 weeks left and couldn't care less.

still, seems like a basic courtesy kind of thing. With all new brass at my school I suspect I will be subjected to this ritual shortly Rolling Eyes

I suppose I'll just "endure" it.. one more time.

Just say you're busy and you're so sorry. I hate school dinners and I'm not really that fond of Korean food, so I told my school I have Crohn's disease and can't eat anything spicy or vinegary. It's never come up again.

that would be nice if you really want to eat whatever it is they'll be serving (almost never the case for me).

and of course, your legs will fall asleep and joint stiffen up from sitting on the floor for an hour plus.
