Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Tokyo? Location is more important than price - mid-range would be ideal but it'll only be one night so I'm prepared to fork out a little more for something really special.

I'd prefer Ginza, Shinjuku or Shibuya from what I've heard, but I haven't been to Tokyo so I'm not really sure.

Do they have love motels? Are they good value for money and available on short notice like the ones here?

As far as the hotel goes, 100,000 is about the least I was expecting to pay, so anmy recommendations for more expensive places are welcome too. Cheers.

Just got back from Tokyo, stayed at the Shinjuku Prince Hotel. Came to about $130 US a night. Location is right in the middle of shopping and restaurants, close to train station. Small rooms, but nicely appointed, and pretty good view of Tokyo.

I (and others) have recommended this chain a few times before. Cheap (VERY cheap by Japanese city standards) but as clean and as comfortable as many places you'd pay well over Y10,000 for, easy to book and always in handy locations near public transport.

There's free internet in rooms if you take your laptop, or they'll always have several computers wired up in the reception area.

You get breakfast included too, although it is the stomach cancer special of miso soup and salt flavoured rice balls. Razz

A point to bear in mind with Japanese love motels is that once you're in the room, you tend to be stuck there until you leave, be that the following morning or whenever you're "finished". You can't just come and go as you please. The Korean equivalents often are good, practical options for a cheap place to stay in spite of their sometimes dodgy surroundings. Japanese love motels are fine if you're up for a slightly weird only in Japan type experience, but they're otherwise not terribly practical and I'd advise caution if you don't know what you're doing. They're also not that cheap.

Funnily enough I'd given up on this thread and found the Shinjuku Prince hotel on my own, although their Saturday rates are quite a lot higher.

Think I'll avoid the love motels...

When I lived in Kanagawa Prefecture, sometimes when visiting Tokyo, I'd stay at a capsule hotel in Ebisu, just by the subway station. It was great and not expensive at all.

I stayed in the Ueno area of Tokyo and it was hella nice. It is right on the Yamanote Line which is Japan Rail's Tokyo City Circle line. It can get you around to most of the big places in the city very quickly. The hotel I stayed at was Tsukuba Hotel here is the website: http://www.hotelink.co.jp/english/tsukuba/index.html I got the traditional Japanese accomadation for 3800 Yen. The hotel is a short ten minute walk to the Ueno Station which is on the prior mentioned line. The station also has a huge amount of museums as well as a great park around it. It is also a stone's throw away from the Asakusa Shrine, which unfortunately is being renovated right now, but the gates are impressive enough. Ueno is not as boisterous as Shinjuku at night but it still has a few nice little watering holes and Izakaya joints up towards the station. I found Shinjuku a bit scummy at night as well. Being propositioned by pimps at every corner for "sex with girl" got a bit annoying.

I stayed at the Capsule Inn in Akiba. Was a hoot. 4000.

I believe the name of the place is the
Shinjuku Capsule Hotel. For men only.
In 2009, it was 4,200 Yen.
Dry Sauna, Jacuzzi, cafeteria, Big screen TV
Beer Machines, etc.

Right in the heart of the action!
