Good read - thanks to Nathan.

However, I have spoken to many Korean people about this stuff that is finally being published in the media - and most are still in denial, claiming it doesn't exist.

I'm glad to see there is a public outcry. That will help in getting sentencing regulations strengthened.

While that needs to be done, I hope Korea does not go off the deep end like the US has done and make society hypersensitive, even paranoid, about this issue.

This is a really poorly written article serving only to whip up hysteria. The author juxtaposes the horrific, brutal rape and attack upon an eight-year-old girl, with the case of a 12-year-old who willingly chose to meet a guy of 30. It is unable to ascertain from the article, but no force is mentioned there and the sex may have been mutually willing as well. In any event, the girl was less than a year away from being able to legally consent. A two-and-a-half-year stint in prison is certainly enough for him to realize he did something wrong.

He further confuses issues by following that up with the non-sequitur that about half of Korean parents hit their kids.

Quote:
Protection agencies say sex crimes against children are rising at the same time law enforcement agencies, let alone the judiciary, appear to be placing very little importance on such behavior. Only 40 percent of 6,000-odd suspects investigated for child abuse were prosecuted, according to local media last year. Of those convicted, nearly half received only fines and 30 percent received suspended sentences.

In a recent year in the US, only one out of three reports of child abuse were found to be indicated. SK is apparently doing better then the US in that respect.

The article concludes by citing the group of schoolchildren in Daegu who were busted for engaging in sex play with each other. Playing doctor has turned into playing victim and victimizer.

I suppose we shouldn't have expected too much from the author who, btw, is located in Indianapolis!

A commenter said of him:

He is a former janitor and was physically asssaulted by a group of teenage girls in Korea so he now teaches English in Taiwan. Sounds made up, but he will admit it's all true. He also goes by the name of johntoe on the Korea Times website and is just a bitter little man. Ask him for real names or real sources for his fake information and watch him squirm.

How can a grown man be physically assaulted by Korean teenage girls?

Well, I don't know about Korea, but I've seen Japanese guys being sexually attacked by Japanese schoolgirls in a few films I've downloaded Laughing

I find that hard to believe. Every story in the AS article is based on Korean-language reports.

I think that's exactly what's happening. Korea is following the west's lead on this issue as you can see from the promotion of sex offender monitoring anklets.

I was just thinking we needed more hysterical outrage driven by a few isolated incidents here in Korea. Child abuse seems like a key means to this end. Well played, rabble rousers. Well played.

Seriously, though, why can't we ever just have a measured, reasonable response to perceived problems? Judges seem to have a tendency to be overly forgiving regarding certain sex crimes? That can be solved without turning society into a paranoid sex crimes witch hunt; the Korean legal system simply needs to be less lenient and more evenly applied. In fact, that's what the entire article should have been about: Korean judges being too lenient, not just with sexual crimes, but with many crimes. The article even lists examples of other criminal activity where the sentencing was obviously insufficient (18 months for torturing and murdering your stepson?). No sexual witch hunt is required here, just a reform of the Korea legal system.
