Brought a laptop over from NZ which runs on 250v. Will I need a power converter to run it in korea or will a travel adaptor work fine?

Looked around online and some information states that is needed and some does not. Anyone here know from personal experience? Would hate to blow up my new laptop?

Look on the box between the laptop and the wall, does it say 110v to 250v

If so then it is fine

If it doesn't it will still be fine 250 is the max that NZ puts out, I have several NZ devices that work fine

cheers for your reply

the box says input - 100- 240v 50-60hz

So i hope that it will be fine.

If its not, do you think it will fry the computer or just the socket?

Just being pariond I guess, but like I say would hate to have to get a new laptop as am a bit short on cash having only just arrived here.

It won't fry unless there is something wrong with the socket (which is just as likely back home as here).

Bit of advice, bring over a multibox, that way if you have a couple of appliances (phone, hair clippers, hair dryer (if you're a girl) etc) you will only need to get one adapter. Your phone won't work, but it is good for keeping numbers of friends back home, plus you can use it as a gsm phone if you travel

cheers for your help blackjack, been a bit of a rough start to my time here so your advice is welcome.

Anyway plugged in system, didn't fry but wont charge either - guess I brought the wrong adaptor. Dam brought the most expensive one in the shop to.

Anyway out of battery now...

Thanks again

Doesn't NZ use the same electrical system as Korea?

If so, you shouldn't need any adaptor.

Just a note to anyone else coming over with lots of electrical stuff. Check on the adaptor that comes with the device. All electronics use adaptors because they use DC and what comes out of the wall is AC. Many adaptors that come with electronics are good for any system from 100V to 240V. Laptops are in this category (check to be sure though), and all you'll need is something to physically adapt the shape of an American flat pronged plug into a Korean/European round pronged plug. Some stuff is specific to the 100-120V system. BUT for common stuff like a phone charger, DS, mp3 player, etc, you can just get a new adaptor when you're here. Not all power converters (to change 240V to 110V) are reliable. If you DO get a converter to reduce the voltage, make sure it's a good one.

Should have thought of this earlier but there is an easier way.

Pull the cable that takes the power from the wall to the black box out. Take that to a computer shop (even emart or homeplus) and simply swap it out.

Should run you less than 5000. If you are in beomgye i might even be able to just give you one. I normally have a few floating around. (my schedule is normally pretty tight tho)

Hi Snowcrash, I'm from NZ also, I've had no problems with the voltage here and my laptop is absolutely fine. The only thing I've ever used is the NZ/Korea adaptor to change from 3 prongs to 2.

Have a good week,

G

Cheers for your comments - much appreciated.

Got an adaptor today and plugged in and everything seems to be working fine.

Also nice to talk to a couple of fellow Kiwis so thanks again all.
